  1. Setting Goals 8th Grade Bobcat Presentation SY 2008-2009

  2. Why Set Goals??? • If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there. (Chesire Cat, Alice in Wonderland) • A person who doesn’t have a goal will be used by someone who does. (www.com Goals)

  3. The Consequence of Not Having Goals End Start

  4. Why Set Goals??? • A life without goals leads to a life of apathy, lack of direction, lack of purpose, a lot of frustration and a lot of regret. • Setting and achieving goals gives you a life filled with satisfaction, growth, direction, purpose, and happiness.

  5. How to Develop S.M.A.R.T Goals • People develop all sorts of goals in life but sadly, not all of them are achieved • We need to develop S.M.A.R.T. Goals!

  6. S.M.A.R.T. • SPECIFIC State exactly what you want to accomplish; do not be vague or confusing, but clear and concise Ex. I want to save $450 to purchase a new HP 8120n desktop computer.

  7. S.M.A.R.T. • MEASURABLE State what you want and when you want it; enables you to measure progress at any point along the way Ex. I want to save $450 to purchase a new HP 8120n, desktop computer by Dec. 31st, 2007.

  8. S.M.A.R.T. • ACTION-ORIENTED Indicate how they will be achieved; specify what you need to do to reach your goals Ex. On September 1st, 2008, I will begin saving my weekly allowance of $30 and put it in my piggy bank

  9. S.M.A.R.T. • REALISTIC They are possible; they are attainable considering the resources and constraints relative to your situation Ex. Weekly allowance of ($30) x 3 months or (16 weeks) = 480

  10. S.M.A.R.T. • TIMELY Allow reasonable time to achieve them, but not so much time that you lose focus or motivation. Create specific start and deadline dates. Ex. Beginning September 1st I will save $30 (weekly) to save a total of $450 by Dec. 31st.

  11. Overcoming Obstacles • There will always be bumps in the road; expect them • Ask yourself the following questions: • If I get discouraged or have problems with reaching my goal who can I go to for help? • Is there a person(s) that can keep me accountable in reaching my goal?

  12. Overcoming Obstacles • Am I… In the right place? At the right time? With the right people? Doing the right thing? “We become like the people we associate with the most.”
