Warm-up 11/19/13 The American Revolutionary War began in April 1775 when a group of Minutemen met the British at ____________________________________________________, where "the shot heard 'round the world" and an exchange of gunfire left eight Americans dead. ___________________________________an English radical pamphleteer, wrote Common Sense, denouncing monarchy and advocating complete independence for the colonies. After the loss of Philadelphia, General Washington encamped his army at _____________________________________________, Pennsylvania for the winter of 1777.

  2. What was the first “official” battle of the Revolution? Why? First official battle was the Battle of Bunker Hill because it was a planned attack. Why didn’t George Washington want to recruit African Americans? Many white southerners opposed the idea, but Washington changed his mind after the British promised any slave who fought for the crown freedom. • List one woman who contributed to the war effort and specifically what she did. • Deborah Sampson contributed to the war effort by dressing as a man and taking on the alias Robert Shirtliff. She fought on the battle field bravely.

  3. What happened at the Battle of Quebec? Who won? • At the Battle of Quebec Gen. Richard Montgomery and Benedict Arnold failed in capturing Quebec . Montgomery is killed and Arnold is wounded. Patriots lose the battle. • What happened at the Battle of Long Island? Who won this battle? Who was Nathan Hale? • Washington fails to secure the Jamaica Pass and Howe is able to pass through it. It is a bad defeat for Washington and he sits in what is now Times Square and waits for the Hessians to come and kill him. Nathan Hale is a spy who is caught by Howe and executed.

What was the fatal mistake that Johann Rall made? • Washington plans a surprise Christmas attack by crossing the Delaware River and engaging in a Battle with the Hessians. Johann Rall the Hessian commander does not read the note that contains the information that Washington is on the move. He pockets the note. At the Battle of Princeton Washington is able to sneak away from Cornwallis by burning campfires and muffling the wheels of this wagon. • What is a mercenary? What is a Hessian? • A mercenary was a paid foreign soldier. A Hessian was a mercenary from Germany and their were paid soldiers in the service of England.

  5. What happened at The Battle of Saratoga? Why was this considered the turning point of the war? • At the Battle of Saratoga, Howe fails to meet up with Burgoyne to combine forces and is defeated by Horatio Gates. This is considered the turning point because the French enter the war and form and alliance with the Patriots. • Who was Marquis De Lafayette? How did he help the Continental Army? • Marquis de Lafayette was a young wealthy Frenchmen who brought soldiers and volunteers to serve in the Continental Army. He becomes very good friends with George Washington.

  6. Who was Baron Von Steuben? How did he help the soldiers at Valley Forge? • Steuben was a military Prussian general who helped the soldiers at Valley Forge become disciplined and trained them to become better fighters. Also, he helped organize the camps better. • Who was John Paul Jones? What was his role in the American Revolution? • John Paul Jones was a Scottish Navy man. He was in charge of the Bonhomme Richard and he defeated the HMS Serapis.

  7. What happened at Savannah, Charleston, and Camden? • Savannah, Charleston, and Camden were a strategic move for the British to control the Southern region. Savannah, Charleston, and Camden all fell to the British. Horatio Gates is embarrassed and replaced after the Battle of Camden. • What was Guerilla Warfare? Who was the “Swamp Fox?” Why was he called this? • Guerilla Warfare was a specialized way of fighting. It consisted of ambush tactics and the element of surprise on the enemy. Francis Marion was the “Swamp Fox.” He was called this because he was very good at killing his targets and disappearing into the swamps.

What region was the Battle of Long Island fought? • Battle of Long Island was fought in the Middle Region. • What region was the Battle of Brandywine fought in? • The Battle of Brandywine was fought in the Middle Region. • What colony was the Battle of Saratoga fought in? • The Battle of Saratoga was fought in the colony of New York.

  9. List the battles that we have covered in class starting from the New England Region, Middle Region, and The Southern Region.
