  1. Warm-up 11/20/13 Congratulations! We have made it to the FINAL phase of the American Revolution!!!!!! Write down one memorable fact you learned in the unit!

  2. Cast of Characters: The Battle of Yorktown Comte de Rochambeau: was a French nobleman and general. Count de Grasse: French naval commander. Marquis de Lafayette: Wealthy Frenchmen, contributed money and troops to the Continental Army. Commissioned a major General in the Continental Army. General Cornwallis: ABritish Army officer, best remembered as one of the leading British generals in the American Revolution. George Washington: Leader of the Continental Army.

  3. 1. De Grasse departs Haiti for the Chesapeake Bay. Engages in Naval Battle with the British. British navy defeated. 2. At the same time Cornwallis arrives in Yorktown. 3. Washington learns that Cornwallis is encamped at Yorktown and leaves NY. Rochambeau leaves Rhode Island and the two march together and arrive with their troops in Yorktown. 4. Lafayette leaves Maryland and marches to Yorktown and blocks Cornwallis in Yorktown. 5. Cornwallisnow has no navy and is bombarded by Washington and the French for TWO weeks.

  4. Sequence of Events 1. De Grasse departs Haiti for the Chesapeake Bay. Engages in Naval Battle with the British. British navy defeated. 2. At the same time Cornwallis arrives in Yorktown. 3.Washington/Rochambeau arrive with their troops in Yorktown. 4. Washington orders Lafayette to block Cornwallis. 5. Cornwallis now has no navy and is bombarded by Washington for many days.

  5. Surrender at Yorktown Cornwallis surrenders at Yorktown!. Cornwallis is too humiliated to attend the surrendering ceremony. He sends a subordinate to surrender his sword in place of him. Washington does the same. At the ceremony the losing side are to surrender their swords as a custom. At the surrender at Yorktown the British band plays “The World Turned Upside Down.” (Why would the play this song?)

  6. Treaty of Paris 1783 – 3 Parts to the Treaty. The Treaty officially ends the Revolutionary War. Benjamin Franklin involved in writing and it takes place in Paris, France. The Treaty Includes three parts: 1. England recognizes the independence of the United States 2. United States borders are set: Atlantic Ocean to Mississippi River and the Great Lakes down to Southern Georgia. • 3. Florida is returned to the Spanish.
