  1. 해외 WEB ART FESTIVAL 해외에서 진행되고 있는 web art festival들의 역사와 의의, 배경, 특징 등을 살펴보고 각각의 festival들을 비교해 보도록 하겠다.

IMKP - The International Media Art Award ZKM의 역사 1989년 비디오 게임에서 3차원 프로젝션, 소프트웨어에서 하드웨어에 이르기까지의 다양한 장르의 뉴미디어 리서치와 실험, 그리고 아티스트 레지던스 프로그램을 운영하기위한 센터가 생겨났다. 1980년부터 Karlsruhe시와 지역 대표 정치인, 대학 대표들, 음악 아카데미, 그밖의 기관들로 구성된 project group의 추진으로 1988년 투표를 거쳐 1989년 Heinrich Klotz교수를 Director로 임명하고 옛 군수품 공장을 개조하여 센터를 건립한다. 1997년 이후 일반 관객들이 자유롭게 이용할 수 있으며, 1999년부터 Peter Weibel이 새로운 Director 로써 센터를 운영하고 있다.

  5. IMKP - The International Media Art Award 1992년 독일내의 비디오아트 대회로 시작된 이 행사는 곧 세계적 프로덕션에 초청되면서 미디어아트 포럼으로 알려지게 되었다. 인터렉티브 작품들에 대한 부문은 1997년부터 시작되었다. 올해로 그 9번째 행사가 개최된다. IMKP 행사의 역사

Ars Electronica Festival / Prix Ars Electronica 주최 Linz시와 ORF Upper Austrian Regional Studio 역사 • Ars Electronica Festival은 1979년 예술과 테크놀러지 심포지엄이 제공되는 행사임과 동시에 Linz시민들 생활에 깊이 뿌리박히는 행사로써 기획되었고, 그 첫 해에 열렸던 행사인 “Cloud of Sound”전에서 100,000명의 관객이 몰려 성공을 거두었다. Prix Ars Electronica 는 국제적인 cyberarts competition으로 1987년 생겨난 이래로 15,000명의 과학자 및 예술가들이 참가하였다. Prix Ars Electronica는 1987년 Austrian Broadcasting Corporation Regional Studio의 후원으로 digital media 과학자와 예술가들의 실험무대가 되고 있다. 올해로 15번째 행사가 개최된다. 이제까지 Peter Gabriel, John Lasseter, Linus Torvalds등이 “Golden Nica”를 수상하였다.

Ars Electronica Festival / Prix Ars Electronica 영역 • 처음 시작할 때 Computer Graphics, Computer animation, Digital Music부문으로 나눠졌으나, 1990년 Interactive Art 부문이 첨가 되었고, 1995년에는 Compute rgraphic 부문은 Net Art 부문으로 대체되었다. 그리고 다시 1998년에는 젊은 사람들을 위한 Competition for Young People: under U19/ freestyle computing 부문이 다시 첨가 되었다.

Ars Electronica Festival / Prix Ars Electronica 상금 2001년도 총 상금 - Euro 100.00 (u.s $ 89,700) 심사 위원은 총 18명(6분야 x 3명씩) 에게 상금이 포함된 시상을 하고, 6명에서 12명에게까지는 honarary mention 을 할 수 있는 권한이 주어지게된다 *심사위원은 각 섹션당 5명씩 배정되어 있다. 2001년도 주제 : Take Over - Who’s doing the art of tomorrow? (9월3일 시상식과 함께 전시 및 세미나 프로그램이 4일과 5일 계속된다.)

  14. Deaf (Dutch Electronic Art Festival) 주최 V2 Organization in Rotterdam (Netherlands) 역사 V2는 1981년 Den Bosch에 있는 multimedia group에 의해 Center for art and (media-)technology로써 생겨났다. V2는 다양한 장르의 미디어들의 교류에 초점을 맞춘 기관이다. 창의적 활동들, 특히 전자 네트워크나 인터넷을 통한 활동을 통한 관계에 중점을 둔다. 1986년부터V2에서는 the Manifestation for the Unstable Media라는 행사를 매년 개최하였다. 이것이 Deaf행사의 전신이 되는 행사였다. 1994년 이후 Deaf라는 이름으로 2년에 한번씩 festival형식의 행사가 개최되고 있다.

  15. Deaf (Dutch Electronic Art Festival) 행사 개요 V2행사 기간동안 Installations, www-sites, CD-roms 그리고 live performance, seminar, workshop, academic symposium이 열린다. 특정 작품에 대한 시상대신 작품 혹은 중요한 담론을 열어 주는 포럼 등을 커미션 해 주는 방식을 택하고 있다. 2000년 행사 주제 : “Machine Time”

Webbyawards The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences 주최 역사 1996년 6월에 그 첫번째 행사를 시작으로 올해 6번째 행사 개최 목적 매일매일 다양한 사이트를 서치하고 다니는 사이버 커뮤니티에게 웨비 어워드에 노미네잇된 사이트들은 인터넷 유저들의 정보 수집이나 엔터테인먼트를 위하여 모든 종류의 사이트 들 중 가장 대표적인 사이트들을 노미네잇 시켜 인터넷 활동을 활발하게 하기 위함이다. 심사 위원 Members of “The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences” (The Academy)

Transmediale Transmediale Festival 주최 역사 1988년 VideoFest로 출발했다. 베를린 포더빌에서 열리는 media art festival로 최근 더욱 빠르게 성장하고 있는 Festival이다. 특히 2000년부터는 V2에서 5년동안 일해오던 Andrea Boeckmann을 새로운 artistic director로 영입해 오면서 중요한 전환기를 맞이하며, 새로운 미디어 아트 페스티벌로 자리매김하고 있다. 올해로 14번째 행사를 치뤘다. 행사 소개 현대 사회 디지털 테크놀러지를 반영하는 행사로써, 미디어 작업을 하는 작가와 새로운 디지털 문화 프로젝트를 만드는 다른 다양한 전문가들로 구성된 포럼을 제공한다. 행사 기간중 하루는 작가 작품 발표와 시상식이 열리고, 또한 비디오 스크리닝등 다양한 행사가 마련된다.

  22. Maap-Multimedia Art Asia Pacific 주최 Multi Media Art Asia Pacific 목적 디지털 아트 창작과 발전을 위하는 행사로써, 새로운 형식의 예술과 기술을 시험하는 무대. MAAP은 artists, multimedia developers, screen practitioners, sound artists to exhibit들을 위한 장소를 제공하는 것을 목적으로 한다. Maap은 호주에 있는 유일한 새로운 기술의 문화적 적용을 목적으로 한 페스티벌이고, 동시에 오세아니아 지역의 디지털 아트 커뮤너티를 엮는 새로운 관계를 만드는것을 목적으로 한다. 행사 소개 Maap festival은 퍼블릭 이벤트, 시네마 스크리닝과 전시, 특히 테크놀러지를 사용하는 작업과 관객의 적극적인 참여에 초점을 맞춘 전시를 포함한다.

  23. Maap-Multimedia Art Asia Pacific 역사 1998년부터 일년에 한번씩 개최되고 있다. 영역 Media installation, web design, digital graphics, animation, video, sound, photography, CD-ROM, and Internet 2001 행사 소개 2001년 10월 12일부터 14일까지 치뤄진다. 이번 행사 주제는 “Excess”이며, 이미 7월중으로 신청은 마감되었다. 전시이외에 포럼과 시네마 스크리닝 등 다양한 행사가 준비 되어 있다.

WRO Biennale 주체 WRO Center for Media Art Foundation in Poland 역사 1989년 Open Studio/WRO 와 WRO Center for Media Art Foundation이 공동으로 만들었다 행사 소개 Non-profit art foundation으로 뉴미디어 영역의 사회적 문화적 활동과 교육을 목적으로 한다. WRO는 비상업적 프레젠테이션, 강의와 미디어 아트 전시등을 기획한다. 지금까지 200여개의 이벤트를 아트 스쿨, 미술관, 갤러리 그리고 문화원 등에서 만들었다.

  25. WRO Biennale 2001 행사 주제 - “Screen” 2001년 5월 1일부터 6일까지 Wroclaw에서 열렸다. 폴란드를 포함한 동유럽에서 가장 큰 전기 컴퓨터 아트 비엔날레로 자리매김 하고 있다. 심사 위원 Katherine Carl, Erkki Huhtamo, Jaroslaw Kapuscinski, Sally Jane Norman and Alexei Shulgin 수상 Oliver Pietsch, Heroes (Germany) Anita Sarosi, Dragon (Hungary) Andreas Gedin, Gemini (Sweden) (n:ja) Rewind (Austria) Alex Sanjurjo Rubio, Ventilar (Spain) Dan Geesin and Esther Rots, The Garden (UK-Netherlands) BIT - Bureau of Inverse Technology, BIT Plane (US)

  26. 비고 그동안 많은 web-art festival들이 단발적으로 생겨났다가 사라지곤 했다. 여기에 선별된 festival들은 그 중에서도 역사가 깊고, 가장 활발하게 국제적으로 운영되고 있는 festival들이다. 그 중에서도 IMKP와 Ars Electronica Festival, V2에서 운영하는 Deaf와 같은 경우는 그 규모면에서 단연 가장 큰 행사라고 할 수 있다. 규모가 크고 상금의 금액이 많은 만큼 다양한 작업들이 출품되고, 다양한 행사들이 준비된다. 그에 반해, 호주에서 개최되는 Maap과 poland에서 개최되는 Wro Biennale는 각각 오세아니아와 동유럽의 네트워크 형성에 초점을 맞춘 행사라고 할 수 있겠다. 매 년 행사마다 각각 주제가 주어지기는 하지만, 광범위한 주제를 설정하여 더 많은 작가들의 참여를 유도하고 있는것도 web festival들의 특색이다. 불과 몇 년 전까지만 해도, 대부분 festival의 수상자들이 겹치면서, 주류를 형성하는 작업과 작가들이 한정되어 있던 반면에, 최근 1~2년 사이에는 더욱 다양한 작가들이 수상을 하면서, 그 영역이 활성화 되어 그 전망이 더욱 밝다.
