  1. It’s Hard to Believe… …that the chromosphere has anything fundamental to do with a solar flare

  2. Stellingen-pro • The chromosphere is too tenuous to affect the energetics of a flare; iethe current systems must have deep roots a la McClymont & Fisher (1989), arXiv:1004.5318. • Footpoints and ribbons clearly point to magnetic loop structures in the corona as sources of flare energy and dynamics. To deny the primacy of the low-beta corona in flare physics would be to reject CSHKP!

  3. Stellingen-contra • The bulk of flare luminosity, as established by recent TSI measurements, come from the lower solar atmosphere • White-light continuum and high-energy radiations (HXR and gamma-rays) come from footpoint sources • The coronal mass of a flare also comes from the chromosphere

  4. Stellingen-contra • The impulsive phase of the flare, best seen in the lower solar atmosphere, marks the acceleration phase of an energetic CME • Preflare storage of energy in the chromosphere has not definitively been ruled out. The gravitational and luminosity reservoirs need a modern assessment
