CLASS PREREQUISITES • Drafting and Design (Basic Drafting) - Everyone • Know all basic drafting practices • Know how to use the Drafting Machine • Know mechanical style lettering, dimensioning, etc. • Solid Works – anyone wishing to use CAD • Be familiar with all aspects of drawing creation, including . . . • Layering (control line type & thickness, line type, color, etc.) • Dimensioning

  3. Nature of the Course • Break down a designed mechanism (assembly) into its component parts • Break down each part into features and design each one • Determine all size and location dimensions necessary to define each feature • Detail each part for manufacture

  4. Care of Drawings • Manual (hand drawn) drawings • Use a tube or other means to keep vellums clean and unfolded • CAD drawings • Save often while drawing • Save to two disks at the end of the drawing session. Leave one here, take one home • Remove drawing from drafting computer at the end of the drawing session THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR LOST OR DAMAGED DRAWINGS OR CAD FILES

  5. Classroom Etiquette • Keep a clean work area. Clean up garbage, old drafting tape, etc. • Return reference materials to their proper places after use. Don’t leave them lying around the room or in other rooms • Arrive on time so you don’t disrupt the lecture • Turn off all cell phones, pagers, etc before class • Stay off the internet

  6. REFERENCE MATERIALS • Machinery’s Handbook – I will provide you with the information you need for this class • Retaining Ring design manual – provided • Bearing design manual – provided • Oil Seal design manual – provided • Lecture Notes – your responsibility • Handouts - provided

  7. DIMENSIONING • Done according to ANSI standards • Use only unidirectional style • REVIEW DIMENSIONING SECTION OF Design Drafting (Drafting and Design) STUDENT PACKET ! (See my blog)

  8. What’s Expected of You ? • Attend class every day • Arrive on time • Bring notebook, and handouts every class • Take detailed notes • Schedule time for homework each day • Notify me of problems in a timely manner • Turn in work on time
