  1. Kingdom protista March 1st 2016

  2. Learning objectives • Identify and Label the generic Protist structure • Explain the current theory on how Protists evolved from Monerans • Explain how structure, function, environment and cost-benefit are related (Game)

  3. Why study protists?

  4. Why study protists?

  5. Why study protists?

  6. What is a protist? Anything that isn’t a bacteria, plant, fungi or animal But more officially…

  7. What is a protist? Unicellular (one-celled), Eukaryotic organisms

  8. What is a protist? Kingdom Protista is extremely diverse. There is still a lot of debate about how they should be classified

  9. What is a protist? • Protists are Eukaryotes • Nuclei containing DNA • Membrane-bound organelles

  10. Where do protists come from? Euglena can live without their chloroplasts Chloroplasts and mitochondria have their own DNA!

  11. Where do Protists come from? • Endosymbiont Hypothesis • Organelles are descended from moneran that lived in a symbiotic relationship • Eventually the moneran no longer needed to live independently Lynn Margulis

  12. Where do Protists come from?

  13. Where do protists come from? Cyanophoraparadoxa (Blue-green bearer; paradox)

  14. Protistsare roughly categorized as… Animal-like Plant-like Slime-like

  15. Structure and Function Does this cell likely live in water or on land?

  16. Structure and Function When studying an organism, think about why it has the structure it has. What environment does it live in? How are they adapted for the environment?

  17. Create a Protist Game • You will be given a prompt • Using that prompt, you will create a Protist • Your goal is to try to make a Protist that is • Costs as little as possible • Is functional in the environment given by prompt

  18. Prompt 1 • I am a freshwater Protist. My main food source is bacteria, which I have to track down.

  19. Prompt 2 • A Protist that lives off of humans as a parasite.

  20. Prompt 3 • I am a marine protist. I derive my food from sunlight.
