  2. Fatigue – what is it? • Fatigue is a process by which a component is weakened by repeated bending or other cyclic stress, often to the point of fracture. • The stress can be small enough to be below the ultimate tensile stress, or even the yield stress of the material. • Over a large number of cycles the effect can be catastrophic. 3. Fatigue Analysis – what is it? • Calculation of number of repetitions of load before failure • Expressed as component life – cycles, hours, flights etc • May be calculated from measured strain history or predicted static stresses International Exports www.internationalexports.co.uk

  4. Fatigue Analysis – why do it? • Improved product quality • Optimized design weight/function • Greatly reduced warranty costs • Reduced costs/time to market • Saves both money & lives International Exports www.internationalexports.co.uk

  5. Fatigue Analysis – why do it? • “Widely estimated that 90% of structural engineering failure occurs as a result of fatigue” International Exports www.internationalexports.co.uk

  6. Fatigue Analysis – why do it? De Haviland Comet 3 Crash between 1953 and 1954 Fleet grounded Fatigue of fuselage around windows due to cyclic pressure loading International Exports www.internationalexports.co.uk

  7. Fatigue Analysis – why do it? Alexander Kielland Oil Drilling Platform 1980 Catastrophic collapse 123 killed Fatigue of a main support brace due to repeated wave loading International Exports www.internationalexports.co.uk

  8. Fatigue Analysis – How should you do it? • Physical test -- Expensive and slow • requires physical prototypes • Hand calculation -- Limited application, • requires expertise • Fatigue Wizard -- EASY & COST EFFECTIVE! International Exports www.internationalexports.co.uk

  9. Our Mission • To make fatigue analysis both achievable and affordable for a wider user base. • Achievable through well designed EASY to use software requiring minimum training and prior knowledge of fatigue theory • Affordable through targeted functionality International Exports www.internationalexports.co.uk

  10. Our Software “ • FatigueWizard is an innovative software product designed to enable any engineer to carry out sophisticated fatigue life analysis using FE stress results. • A Windows style wizard takes the user through fatigue analysis which will guide even the novice CAE engineer through the steps necessary to perform complex analysis. “ International Exports www.internationalexports.co.uk
