  2. Think & Wonder Are your ideas about fats changing? Why do you think your body needs fats? First, we’ll take a look at the class results from testing foods for fats. Then, we will read more about fats and how they affect our health.

  3. Materials For each student: • LRB • Liquids and Fats Testing Tables For each group: • 1 lab bag • Foods bag • Liquids bag • Brown paper bags

  4. Find Out For Yourself! • Look at your liquids test table • Look at the “Class Liquids Test Table.” • Do any of your results differ from the Class Liquids Test Table? • Can you think of some reasons why results might differ? • Why is it helpful to look at the whole class’s results instead of just one person’s results? • How can we determine which liquids contain fats?

  6. Find Out For Yourself! • Look at your foods test table • Look at the “Class Foods Test Table.” • Do any of your results differ from the Class Foods Test Table? • Can you think of some reasons why results might differ? • Why is it helpful to look at the whole class’s results instead of just one person’s results? • How can we determine which foods contain fats?

  8. Do you need to retest any liquids? Take out six pieces of brown paper bag squares – number them 1 – 5. The last piece is your control. Place the brown rectangles of paper on the desk. Place two drops of liquid on the correct piece of paper. Use a towel to blot the extra liquid from the brown paper. Let the papers dry for 10 min. Observe and record your data.

  9. Do you need to retest any foods? Make predictions prior to beginning the testing process. Number brown paper 1 – 10 Put one small spoon for each food on correctly numbered paper. Wipe fingers with a paper towel. Rub food hard against paper, wiping your fingers before you test the next food. Let papers dry for 10 minutes

  10. Final Activity • You will be reading about fats and you should keep some questions in mind as you read. • These are questions you asked when we began the Food Chemistry unit. • Read: “Some Good News about Fat”

  11. Questions we have about foods? How do you get food poisoning? Why does fat stay so long in your body? Is sugar cane really high in sugar? Is too much sugar unhealthy? Why are some foods really bad for you even if you’re not allergic to them? How long does it take for food to go through your digestive tract? What foods have the most calcium?
