  1. Nanotechnology RoadmapProgram and Break-out Groups T.P. Pearsall European Photonics Industry Consortium

  2. Welcome • What is the MONA project? • This Program at Photonics West • 4 key issues: • Electronic- Photonic Convergence • Upscaling from Lab Demo to High-Volume Production • Develoment of a Nanophotonics Market • Organizing International Cooperation

  3. Approach • Presentations of roadmapping from around the world • Yasuhiko Arakawa: • “The OITDA Roadmap for Nanophotonics” • Lionel Kimerling: • “Nanophotonics in the MIT Photonics Roadmap Project” • Wei-Xin Ni: • “Planning for Nanophotonics Development in Taiwan” • Jung-Il Lee: • “Nanophotonics Program Development in Korea”, • Thomas Pearsall: • “MONA, the Nanophotonics Roadmap Project in Europe”,

  4. Break-out Group 1 • Electronic-Photonic Convergence Leaders: Kimerling and Ni Key Questions: A. How will the photonics layer be built? Front end Above IC Wafer-Scale bonding of photonic ICs • Challenges to move to a “Fabless” model Design libraries Process and materials standardization • California Room after the Coffee Break

  5. Break-out Group 2 • Upscaling from lab demo to high-volume production Leaders: Fulbert and Kirchain Key Questions: A. How can equipment and / or processes developed for CMOS be re-used for non-CMOS nanophotonics components? • Fabrication of nanophotonic components How and where? volumes • Hillsborough Room after the Coffee Break

  6. Break-out Group 3 • Development of a Nanophotonics Market Leaders: Heuken and Pearsall Key Questions: A. Development of a nanophotonics market in a major application? What is the application? What could be the trigger? Role of politics B. Market Volumes vs Time When must technology breakthroughs occur? • Gold Room after the Coffee Break

  7. Break-out Group 4 • Organizing International Cooperation Leaders: Arakawa and Lee Key Questions: A. Organizing Cooperation Nanophotonics R&D? Roadmapping? B. Standardization in nanophotonics Is there a need? • Valley Room after the Coffee Break

  8. Wrap-Up • Photonic-Electronic Convergence • International Collaboration • Markets for Nanophotonic Applications • Scaling up

  9. Results • Each group will present a 10-minute discussion of its results, followed by 5 minutes of discussion from the audience • MONA will prepare a CD for distribution to all participants at no cost ( so be sure you leave us your name and address )
