  2. Warm Up • 1. Think about 3 things you do EVERYDAY! • 2. Describe how you would do these things in space? Would you have to do them differently?

  3. Volunteers • Who wants to share?

  4. This morning did you….. • Brush your teeth? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bCoGC532p8 • Eat food? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vio09T-8qA • Wash your face with a wet cloth? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFPvdNbftOY

  5. Write in Your Notebook • There are millions of galaxies in the Universe • Eachgalaxy has its ownsolar system • We are in the MilkyWay galaxy

  6. Video on Galaxies • What is a Galaxy? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtHVoM4QFf8 • What is the Milky Way Galaxy? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sm-ucbDVyRU

  7. Write in Your Notebook Through Space Exploration we have: • Landed probes on Mars and Venus and sent probes past Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus • Built an International Space Station • Built a Hubble Telescope

  8. Write in Your Notebook • Space Probes: • Spacecraft that travels and drops into a planet’s atmosphere • Has no astronauts onboard • Collects scientific information and sends it back to scientists on Earth

  9. Space Probes Today • NASA's Voyager 1: 1st human-made object to travel beyond the solar system • 36-years-old • About 12 billion miles from our sun.

  10. Voyager Probes • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLK4IMtUSVg

  11. Write in Your Notebook • International Space Station (Known as ISS) • A combined effort of 15 different countries

  12. Write in Your Notebook • International Space Station (ISS) • Allows astronauts to live there for months to conduct research that cannot be done on Earth

  13. Interesting ISS Facts • The size of a football field • Weighs 924,739 pounds. • Has more livable room than a conventional six-bedroom house with 2 bathrooms, a gymnasium and a 360-degree bay window.

  14. Video on ISS • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtrVwX1ncqk

  15. Write in Your Notebook • Telescopes: • Instruments designed to collect electromagnetic (light) radiation • Allows us the see far away objects in space • 1st telescope invented over 400 years ago

  16. Write in Your Notebook • Hubble Telescope: • Orbits Earthand focuses on distant objectswithinoursolar system and Universe.

  17. Write In Your Notebook • Hubble Telescope estimated the Earth to be 13.5 Billion years old!

  18. Launch of Space Shuttle Discovery Hubble Space Telescope on boardApril 24, 1990

  19. Hubble Telescope Video • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxIRvk20lUg

  20. Write In Your Notebook • NASA Spinoffs: • Technology that was developed for astronauts and space exploration BUT now benefits us on Earth! • Microwaves TV Satellite Dishes • Hand held calculators Bar Coding • Ear Thermometers Memory Foam

  21. Today’s Activities • 1. Complete our Moon phases foldable • 2. Complete the worksheet (double sided)

  22. Another Important Telescope:Fermi-Gamma-ray Space Telescope -Has unveiled a previously unseen structure centered in the Milky Way that spans 50,000 light years and maybe the remnant of an eruption from a supersized black hole at the center of our galaxy.

  23. 3. Spitzer Space Telescope

  24. NASA’s Fleet of “Great Observatories” • Chandra X-ray Observatory

  25. Info about Chandra The X-ray Observatory • Chandra allows scientists from around the world to obtain X-ray images of exotic environments to help understand the structure and evolution of the universe.

  26. 4. De-orbited Compton Gamma Ray Observatory

  27. Space Probes over Time • Sputnik 1: 1st probe to go into space. It was launched on Oct. 4, 1957, by the former Soviet Union. • Explorer 1: Jan. 31, 1958, the United States sent a probe into space. These first probes studied Earth from space. They also learned what it's like to be in space. • This was the beginning of the Space Race between the United States and Soviet Union.

  28. Space Probes over Time • Sputnik • Explorer 1

  29. The Countries of the ISS • Around the room Activity • You will record information about each countries contribution to the ISS • You will also draw and color each country’s flag

  30. Space Station Kids: ISS • http://iss.jaxa.jp/kids/en/life/index.html • http://www.space.com/18585-space-station-tour-with-suni-williams-video-show.html
