  1. Measuring Development Lesson 41 – pages 44-45

  2. Lesson Aims • To learn that development is the process through which quality of life improves. • To learn how development can be measured. • To compare different measures of development. • Key skill = number

  3. Development • International development is sometimes called human development. It is very closely linked to economic development. Simply put: • It is the way in which the quality of life in a country changes over time. People should get richer, live longer & have more opportunities.

  4. Development is measured using the HDI (Human Development Index). The HDI is worked out by putting together 3 important pieces of information: • Life expectancy • Literacy • Real GDP (Gross Domestic Product – is how much money is earned) – real GDP looks at that compared to how much it would buy – against a typical basket of food.

  5. HDI 2009

  6. Activity • What is development? • What is the HDI and how is it worked out? • Compare the levels of development shown by the HDI map for Africa and Europe.

  7. Other Measures • How else might development be measured? • Draw a scattergraph of this data putting IMR on the vertical axis and GDP on the horizontal axis. • Describe the type of correlation shown.

  8. Negative CorrelationWhat are Mr B’s deliberate mistakes? Title Label axis and units Scattergraph not line graph Label axis and units
