  3. CONTEMPORARY LONDON ● Population of London is over 8million people making it the biggest city in Europe. ● London isoneof the major centre for the global economy, finances and international business. ● London contains four World Heritage Sites:

  4. UNESCO The Tower of London Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortressis a historic castlewithoften bloody history. The Historic Settlement of Greenwich. Greenwich is known for its maritime history and the Meridian. It hosts university and the National Maritime Museum.

  5. Margaret's Church Originally built by Benedictines in the 12th century. WestminsterAbbey is a place of society weddings and many notable burials took place there. The Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew was founded in 1759, and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003

  7. Piccadilly Circus This square iscalled a circus, meaninga round open space at a street junction. Trafalgar square The name commemorates theBattleofTrafalgar in 1805, a naval victory over Napoleonic France. Nelsons' Column guarded by four lion statues is located in the centre of the square, which is used for community gatherings. St Paul's Cathedral Buckingham Palace has been used as a royal residence since 1837. It is a principal workplace of the British Monarch. Queen Victoria Monumentwas erected in front of the palace in the year of her coronation. The present church dating from the late 17th century was built to an English Baroque design by Sir Christopher Wren, as as part of a major rebuilding program which took place in the city after the Great Fire in 1666, and was completed within his lifetime. It is a seat of Bishop of London.

  8. Tower Bridge over the river Thames, the Embankment with Canary Wharf The second tallest building of London is the One Canada Square Tower. Canary Wharf is located on theWest India Docks. From 1802, the area was one of the busiest docks in the world. By the 1950s, the port industry began to decline, leading to the docks closing by 1980. It is one of London's two main financialcentres– along with the traditional City of London.

CULTURE Opera and ballet are based in Covent Garden and Royal Opera House The Natural History Museum Islocated in South Kensington that was developed as Albertopolis, a cultural and scientific quarter. One of the biggest carnivals in the world takes place in the Notting Hill The Nation Gallery at Trafalgar Square. The British National collection of Western Art to 1900 is held there. All the major theatres are located in the West End. The British Museum wasestablished 1753. Originally containing antiquities, natural history specimens and the national library, the museum now has 7 million artefacts from around the globe

According to an article in the Guardian „more than 300 languages are spoken by the people of London, and the city has at least 50 non-indigenous communities with populations of 10,000 or more.“ The biggest ethnic communities are Pakistani, Indian, Black African and Jamaican, and Asian.
