  1. Brain Stem, Cerebellum, Diencephalon Ch. 14-2

  2. Brain Stem • Three components • Medulla oblongata • Pons • midbrain

  3. Brain Stem • Medulla Oblongata • Where tracts cross so that the sides of the brain control opposite sides of the body • FUNCTIONS • Controls rate and force of heartbeat and diameter of blood vessels • Adjusts rhythm of breathing • Controls reflexes for coughing, vomiting, swallowing, hiccupping, and sneezing

  4. Brain Stem • Midbrain • FUNCTIONS • Control eye movements • Reflex center for eye, head, and neck movements for “startle reflex” • Neurons here help control subconscious muscle activities • This is damaged in Parkinson’s disease • Pons • FUNCTION: Helps control breathing

  5. Cerebellum • 2nd largest part of brain • Inferior and posterior portion • FUNCTIONS • Evaluates how well movements are being carried out • Regulates posture and balance • May be involved in cognition and language processing

  6. Diencephalon • Thalamus • Relays sensory info, perceives touch, pain, temp, etc. • Hypothalamus • Integrates ANS and pituitary gland • Regulates emotional and behavioral patterns, circadian rhythms • Controls body temp., eating, drinking • Epithalamus • Secretes melatonin – controls sleep/wake cycle
