  3. Battle Background • Began in late August, 1942 • After Hitler failed to take over Moscow, decided Stalingrad was a must for many reasons • Morale • Supplies • Location

  4. The Actual Fighting • Hitler started by using his Luftwaffe, went on night raids (Similar to what?) • Stalingrad immediately in ruins, however Stalin demanded that the city be defended at all costs • Germany controlled 90% of the city…

  5. Operation Uranus • Thanks to the Russian winter, The Soviets had time to regroup and re-orgranize • Came up with Operation Uranus • They would surround the Germans, in hopes of cutting off supplies

  6. Operation Uranus • Operation was huge success, military commanders begged Hitler to get out, but he refused… • Finally, in February, German soldiers, frostbitten and on the edge of death, surrendered
