  2. Overview Took place in present day “Volgograd” Took place from July 17, 1942 to February 2, 1943 Soviets destroyed the German 6th Army First German defeat of World War II

  3. Timeline July 17, 1942 – The battle begins; Luftwaffe starts bombing the city and Soviet shipping August 23, 1942 – Panzer column reaches the Volga River September 13, 1942 – Germans soldiers reach Stalingrad (Battle of Stalingrad)

  4. Timeline (Cont.) November 19, 1942 – Operation Uranus: The Red Army begins to surround the German 6th Army November 23, 1942 – 290,000 Axis soldiers were circled December 12, 1942 – A German advance, by Marshal Von Manstein, is made to push back the Soviets February 2, 1943 – All German troops are trapped (Battle of Stalingrad)

  5. How it Ended • Attempts to resupply the Germans failed • Hitler would not allow a surrender • Winter came and killed many Germans due to the cold and disease • On February 2, 1943 Paulus surrendered – of the 91,000 then only 6,000 survived the labor camps (Stalingrad, Grolier)

Casualties Combined casualties of 1,530,000+ 790,000 Soviet casualties (750,000 Soviet military, 40,000 civilians) 740,000 Axis casualties (91,000 captured) The life expectancy for a Soviet private sent to the front was less than 24 hours, while that of a Soviet officer was 3 days. (Battle of Stalingrad)

  8. More Casualties The battle took a toll of roughly 7,700 casualties per day Of the 91,000 German troops taken prisoner, less than 6,000 lived to return home (Battle of Stalingrad) 3,000,000 people died including soldiers and civilians (Stalingrad)
