  1. LUNAR PHASES Taken from Utah Core Solar System TASK Impress your family and friends by telling them the phases of the moon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXseTWTZlks&feature=related

  2. What is the phase of the Moon Today?http://aa.usno.navy.mil/idltemp/current_moon.php • Get READY to Learn the names of each phase of the Moon!!!!

  3. TERMS & FACTS What do we mean by the phase of the moon? The changing shape of the bright part of the Moon that we see. What causes the different phases of the Moon? As the Moon makes its way around the Earth, we see the bright parts of the Moon's surface at different angles. How long does it take the moon to complete one orbit around the earth? The moon goes around the Earth in a Lunar Moon or 29.5 days. The Moon can sometimes be seen in the daytime and sometimes in the night time AND each phase last for about two days.

  4. NEW MOON The moon is between the Sun and the Earth. We see the side which is not lit, so the moon appears dark to us. Time: 6:00 a.m.-6p.m. Highest : Noon (But We Cannot See It!)

  5. Waxing Phases "Waxing" means increasing, or growing larger “Crescent” can mean thin moon or the shape of a banana. Time: 9:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. Highest: 3:00p.m. 1.Waxing Crescent MoonNight Moon

  6. Quartermoon • Sometimes its called Half Moon because only half of the moon's surface is visible from Earth • 2. First quarter-Night • You can tell when the moon is first quarter because the sun-lit side is on the right side. At this phase the moon is getting brighter, on its way to Full Moon. • Time: Noon-Midnight • Highest 6:00p.m. • 3.WaxingGibbous Moon • A gibbous moon is a very bright moon. • The word gibbous comes from a root word that means hump-backed. You can see the hump-backed shape of the waxing gibbous moon. Closer to Full Moon • Time: 3:00p.m.-3a.m. • Highest: 9 p.m.

  7. 4.FULL MOON Full moon always comes about two weeks after new moon. At this phase the Earth is between the sun and the moon. • A Full Moon is the only moon phase that shines the whole night through!!! • Time: 6:00p.m.-6:00a.m. • Highest: Midnight

  8. Waning Phases • 5.WaningGibbousMoon • Remember how bright a gibbous moon is? • On its way to Last Quarter Moon • Time: 9:00p.m.-9a.m. • Highest: 3:00 a.m. • 6. Last Quarter moon • Similar to first quarter • A third or last quarter moon shows the sunlit side of the moon on the left. • We probably never see this phase of the moon at night because it rises very late • Time: Midnight-Noon • Highest: 6:00a.m.

  9. 7. Waning crescentmoonMorning Crescent “waning” means decreasing, or getting smaller It is also shaped like a banana!!!! The best time to see it is just before sunrise THEN BACK TO NEW MOON!!! Time:3:00a.m-3:p.m. Highest: 9:00 a.m. Moon Simulator: http://astro.unl.edu/naap/lps/animations/lps.html
