  3. Background • Around 65-70 AD • First gospel written. • Synoptic • Audience were Gentile Christians being persecuted. • Christians in Syria • Christians in Palestine • Christians during the first Revolt against Rome • These groups were hated BOTH by Jews and Romans.

  4. Mark’s gospel • Based on Peter’s testimony. • Because of the audience, the gospel focuses on remaining faithful to Jesus. • Emphasizes that Jesus himself suffered • Mark says his followers must undergo suffering in order to gain eternal life.

  5. Themes • 2 Questions • Who is Jesus, the person? • Will you follow Jesus? • Take about ten minutes to answer these questions for yourself personally.

  6. Who is Jesus? • Right out of the prologue, Mark says that He is the Messiah. • Gospel is like a persuasive essay • Evidence: • Preaching • Miracles • Passion • Death • Resurrection • Most referred to as the Son of Man

  7. Beginning of Ministry :Jesus as a Teacher • Baptizing in the Jordan. • Prologue ends with the 40 days in the desert. • Mark tells that Jesus sought disciples

  8. First Teachings • Chapters 2-3 • 5 Conflicts with the Pharisees • 1. Blasphemy • 2. With sinners • 3. Not fasting • 4. Eating customs on the Sabbath • 5. Healing on the Sabbath

  10. Healing and Compassion • Healing, exorcisms, nature miracles, resurrection. • Introduction • Acknowledges the faith of the people • Cures/ performs miracle • Result follows (ex. Man sees or man walks for the first time.) • Conclusion/ reaction. • Note: Faith is the most important part in Mark’s miracle accounts.

  11. Paschal Mystery • Death came because religious leaders were threatened. • All humans, not just the Jews, are responsible for his death. • Resurrection proves his divinity and is the greatest part of Salvation History.
