  2. Duties A fashion representative is responsible for selling garments and accessories of a manufacturer to the buyers of retail or wholesale clothing stores. The individual must be highly knowledgeable about the clothing being sold. Other duties include planning events such as trunk shows, fashion shows, and providing customer service.

  3. Education and Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in fashion merchandising or marketing • Experience in the retail industry is critical • Formal training from internship programs

  4. Personal Qualities and Abilities • The individual should be confident and outgoing • Excellent communication skills • A passion for fashion is very important. • Creativity in marketing • Must be willing to work with a variety of people

  5. Salary • U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov) recorded the median salary for fashion representatives in 2006 at $64,440. • Representatives working at larger, more popular companies can earn over $100,000. • Salary varies by size of manufacturer.

  6. Availability and Locations • Fluctuating fashion trends and the nation’s economy usually indicate the availability of jobs. • The rise of online merchandising competition has provided for a decline in the demand for fashion representatives. • Larger metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles and New York offer the best opportunities for someone seeking a job in this industry. • The individual must be willing to travel across the country and over seas to meet with current or potential clients.
