ISP) buys a license (gets a number), to use software • Requires specification of bandwidth to be used (64, 128, 256, 384, 512, 1024 Kbps) • Using the number a license key (and MAC address of PC Card) can be obtained

  34. ORiNOCO Outdoor RouterFeatures • Adaptive Dynamic Polling • Switches between standard CSMA/CA (contention based) operation and “round-robin polling” based on sensed network load • In polling-mode, COR will issue polls; RORs will not transmit unless they are polled • In polling-mode, hidden nodes is addressed, but throughput per ROR might be reduced • IP Routing • RFC Compliant classfull IP router with RIP1 capability is present. • Helps to reduce unwanted traffic on wireless link.

  35. ORiNOCO Outdoor RouterFeatures • Data Compression • Transmissions between IEEE 802.11 systems is associated with relative large inter-frame spaces (gaps), which add to overhead, and reduce throughput. • Smaller packets are combined in so-called “super frames” to reduce overhead on the link. • Throughput increase depends on typical packet size. Applications that use small packets benefit the most. • Continuous Signal Quality Monitoring • RF signal level, noise level and signal quality is monitored continuously for each wireless connection. • Information is recorded from normal traffic (data and polls) and statistics maintained. • Can be queried using SNMP.

  36. ORiNOCO Outdoor RouterFeatures • Bandwidth throttling • Network managers can limit bandwidth per remote station. • This is implemented in the RORs and Outdoor Router Clients. • Remote wireless link test • Quality of a selected link between two Outdoor Routers can be assessed • Active test, that transmits/receives test packets. • Bridge protocol filtering • Capability to block selected Ethernet protocols, in order to reduce loss of bandwidth • VLAN Trunk address support • VLAN trunk addresses are passed though the Outdoor Router • Allows the Outdoor Router to be used in a network with switches

  37. ORiNOCO Outdoor RouterFeatures • Data encryption • WEP64 or 128 RC4 encryption depending on the type of ORiNOCO PC Card used. • CHAP based authentication • Remote stations can only communicate with a Central Outdoor Router, when passing the MD5 based “Challenge Response Protocol”.

  38. ORiNOCO Outdoor RouterTarget applications - Point to point • Used to connect LANs in two different buildings: • Buildings not necessarily on a campus (could be spread over a city) • Distance to cover typically larger than on a campus (2.5 - 20 km) • End to end distance can be increased by use of repeaters • Target businesses: • Central to Branch Office Connectivity • Municipal Offices, Police, Fire, Library • Airports, Oil Exploration and Rigs • Industrial Power, Water, Oil Distribution Networks Multiple Point to Point links Up 11 Mbps

  39. Up 11 Mbps ORiNOCO Outdoor RouterTarget applications - Point to multipoint • Used to connect LANs in a central building to ones in satellite buildings: • Buildings typically on a campus • Distance to cover determined by the size of a campus (1 - 11 km) • Target businesses: • Airports • Manufacturing campuses • University campuses • Military complexes • Oil Exploration sites Point to Multi- Point network

  40. ORiNOCO Outdoor RouterTarget applications - Wireless Internet • Used to connect LANs in a central building and Outdoor Router Client stations to Internet • End points distributed over several locations • Endpoint have no business relation with each other • Distance to cover determined by the size of a campus (1 - 11 km) • Target businesses: • ISP • Cooperation of Schools (different schools interconnected) • Remote access / telecommuting
