  4. It’s not about the technology. It’s about building relationships.

  5. Effective Use – Conversation with the Community – How do we observe, drive and interact with our community?

  6. Observing Conversation In the context of building bridges between the school district and the community, the most important conversation is not between teachers and parents, but between current school parents and others in the community.

  7. Sparking Conversation More important than any single conversation you have with a member of the community, and far more important than what you say about yourself, is what others are saying about you.

  8. Conversational Content Sparking a conversation in social media isn’t all that tough. Getting people talking in a way that leads to an ongoing relationship with positive outcomes, however, takes a bit more contemplation.

  9. Interactive Conversation Most people do not want to converse with institutions. They want to interact with people. Give them someone with which to converse.

  10. Considerations – Setting expectations and boundaries while ensuring appropriate and responsible use.

  11. Social Media is Not Going Away You have two choices: Learn how to use social media Learn how to use social media correctly

  12. Content: Don’t try and be everywhere and everything: Identify your target and evaluate your aim. Build trust and be present: Appoint an administrator (or administrators) who can monitor the social media accounts on a daily basis. Let their community develop its own personality: Pay attention to what your audience is interested in, then facilitate the conversation. Bring value to the conversation and ask questions: Ask questions, comment on hot button topics and trends in education, follow other like-minded organizations and engage in dialogue with them, make a point (but keep it short) and comment out of interest.

  13. Planning: School districts should set aside time for a weekly planning session.

  14. Training: Formal social media training is very important. Social media can be very time consuming, therefore, personnel should know best practices for communicating with audiences, how to efficiently use monitoring tools and how to organize information properly for efficiency.

  15. Social Media Guidelines or Policy: Organizations such as school districts need to have a proper set of social media guidelines in place.  It does not have to be restrictive but should address the following topics: Transparency, Areas of Expertise, Timely Responses, Negative Comments, Business vs. Personal, Handling Mistakes and Confidential Information. http://www.getfreshpr.com/2011/04/how-school-districts-can-use-social-media-to-build-community/
