  1. News Values Section B: The Case Study

  2. BY THE END OF THE LESSON... • You will be able to explain what news values are. • You will be able to identify the relevant news values that are applied to a current online news story.

  3. So, what are news values? • News values, determine how much prominence a news story is given by a media outlet, and the attention it is given by the audience.  News journalism has a broadly agreed set of values, often referred to as ‘newsworthiness’.

  4. What gives these news stories their ‘value’?

  5. How do we define News Values? • Google ‘news values’ and go to the ‘btinternet site to find the definitions of news values. • Once you have found and understood the definitions you must post them to each of your blogs. • Be prepared to feedback!

  6. NEWS VALUES • PROXIMITY • NEGATIVITY • PERSONALISATION • THRESHOLD • REFERENCE TO ELITE PEOPLE • REFERENCE TO ELITE NATIONS • CONTINUITY • UNEXPECTEDNESS • BIZARRE

  7. In your groups assign each story with at least one of the six news values…

  8. SCOUTING FOR STORIES! • I will give each group an online news website and you are to find at least two news stories that you can apply at least two news values to. • Try and get a range of stories for example: current affairs/celebrity/sport. • Be prepared to feedback to the class!

  9. NEWS VALUES • PROXIMITY • NEGATIVITY • PERSONALISATION • THRESHOLD • REFERENCE TO ELITE PEOPLE • REFERENCE TO ELITE NATIONS • CONTINUITY • UNEXPECTEDNESS • BIZARRE

  10. What makes your case study newsworthy? Using the list of news values identify what makes your case study topic newsworthy. You need to think about your target audience and how your media topic area is represented. Example: News Value – Ref to elite nations/people & bizarre/unexpectedness? “My case study is based on the new Sacha Baron Cohen movie ‘The Dictator’ and in light of his recent publicity stunt at the Oscars it was made newsworthy because it was bizarre and made reference to elite people.....”
