  3. The Digital Divide • SERENATE shows it may be widening • Differences vary widely • Need to target support in a tailored fashion • Talk to us – we can help TERENA General Assembly - Zagreb, 22-23 May 2003

Information Gathering • Fringe countries are often isolated for economic reasons • Information flow is frequently poor • “TERENA Missions” have been effective • TERENA should be more proactive in arranging future missions: • Two more during 2003 (Lithuania, Latvia) • Objectives: • Understanding the problem-requirements • Identifying options-opportunities • Recommending Concrete Action Plan TERENA General Assembly - Zagreb, 22-23 May 2003

Support Opportunities • European Union can help • “Digital Divide harms collaboration and progress ” • Investigate opportunities to Support less advanced NRENs • Infrastructure development • Technical & Managerial workshops • Assistance from TERENA on becoming partners in FP projects • Train them to use the system TERENA General Assembly - Zagreb, 22-23 May 2003

Information Sharing • Encouragement to attend TNC • Reports on the TERENA website • Promote working groups of common interest • UNCLE approach • The TERENA Tech-advice service • Benchmarking and Case-making through the use of the TERENA Compendium TERENA General Assembly - Zagreb, 22-23 May 2003

  7. Consultancy & Expertise • Technical and Managerial Workshops • Help in case building • Presentations at National conferences by TERENA Staff • Working visits “Missions” TERENA General Assembly - Zagreb, 22-23 May 2003

Summary • Digital Divide is growing • Help them to help the community • Support needs to be focused and localized • Sharing and collaboration is vital • Intensifying TERENA / membership contact is essential • TERENA will be more pro-active in encouraging the organization of missions TERENA General Assembly - Zagreb, 22-23 May 2003
