  2. Basketball • The Lithuanian basketball team has won Europe Championship in 1937, 1939, 2003. Won 2nd place in 1995 (Athens), and bronze in 2007. • Bronze medal winners in the 1992, 1996, and 2000 Summer Olympics. Finished 4th in 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics. • Junior basketball team (under 19 years of age) has won European Championship in 2003 and took 2nd place in World Championship in the same year. • Junior basketball team (under 21) has won World Championship in 2005 (Argentina) • Europe Championship in 1939 was held in Lithuania. • “Žalgiris" Kaunas has won Europe cup in 1998 and Euroleague in 1999.

  3. Arvydas Romas Sabonis • Born in December 19, 1964.He is a retired Lithuanian professional basketball player and a businessman. He played the center position • Pro career • Sabonis made his pro debut in 1981 with the Žalgiris of his hometown Kaunaswhere he won three consecutive Soviet League titles and reached the 1986 Euroleague finals. • In the 1988 Summer Olympics, Sabonis led the Soviet Union to a gold medal win • In 1995, Sabonis signed with the Blazers. • He won the European Player of the Year twice while playing with the Blazers. He also became a fan favorite. • Sabonis came back to Žalgiris to play his final season. He led the team to the Top 16 stage of the season and was named the Regular Season MVP and the Top 16 MVP. He also became the team's president.

Football in Lithuania • The Lithuanian national football team has been rated around number 60 in FIFA World Rankings in today, with the highest rating being 37 in October 2008, and the lowest 118 on 1 September 2004. • There are individual players playing in strong European football leagues, most famous of them: • Edgaras Jankauskas - winner of Champions League 2004 with FC Porto. • Deividas Šemberas - winner of UEFA Cup 2005 with CSKA. • Marius Stankevičius “SANDORIA”, Marius Žaliūkas ”HEARTS”, Tomas Danilevičius ”LIVORNO”, Deividas Česnauskis (Free agent),Saulius Mikoliūnas (free agent).

  5. The A League is the top division of professional football in Lithuania. There are 8 teams playing. FC EKRANAS, FC SUDUVA, FC VETRA, PAKRUOJO “KRUOJA”, TAURAGES “TAURAS”, GARGZDU”BANGA”, KAUNO “LKKA-TELEDEMA”. • At the beginning of existence of the independent Lithuanian state (from 1919 until the Soviet occupation) the word sport was equaled to the word football. Football players were the first sportsmen to participate in international competitions, notably the 1924 Olympic games in Paris and 1937 in World Cup qualifiers. During the occupation period football was also popular in Lithuania. The main problem in Lithuanian football is a lack of stadiums and training grounds. Now situation is getting better. Edgaras Jankauskas won the Champions league in 2004 with FC Porto. Now Edgaras is thinking to end his career and become a coach.

Athletics In Lithuania • Lithuanian athletes have won some medals in the Olympics and European/World championships. • Virginijus Alekna discus thrower.Two times Olympic gold medalist, being the top one. • Also Austra Skujytė born 12 August 1979 in Biržai is a Lithuanian athlete. on August 21, 2004 where she captured the Olympic Silver medal. • Edvinas Krungolcas born 21, January 1973 is a Lithuanian modern pentathlete who won the silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. • Andrejus Zadneprovskis born 31 August 1974 in Kaliningrada Lithuanian modern pentathlete who won the silver medal at the 2004 summerOlympic. • Zadneprovskis won the Gold medal in the Modern Pentathlon World Championships in the year of 2000 and 2004. He also owns the bronze medal of the Modern Pentathlon World Championships 2006 in Guatemala.

Virgilijus Alekna • The most famous athlete is Virgilijus Alekna. • Born in13 February 1972 in Terpeikiai, near Kupiškis Alekna has so far won two gold medals in the Summer Olympics, both in the discus throw. His personal record is 73.88 meters (242 ft 4½ in), surpassed only by the world record (74.08 m.). Alekna was awarded the title of the Athlete of the Year for 2000 by Track and Field News. He was also awarded the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas by the government of Lithuania. He became the Lithuanian Sportsman of the Year 4 times (2000, 2004, 2005, and 2006).

  9. Cycling in Lithuania • There are Lithuanian cyclists with high achievements in prestigious cycling tours and in World Championships. The achievements of Lithuanian women cyclists are especially noteworthy. Lithuanian women cyclists made their mark on the international scene starting from 1991. • Among the best Lithuanian women cyclists were: • Twin sisters Jolanta Polikevičiūtė and Rasa Polikevičiūtė (2001 World Road Race Champion). • Edita Pučinskaitė (1999 World Road Race Champion). • Diana Žiliūtė (1994 World Junior Road Race Champion, 1998 World Road Race Champion, and 2000 Olympic Games Road Race bronze medalist).

Gintautas Umaras Gintautas Umaras (born May 20, 1963) is a retired track and road cyclist from Lithuania, who represented the USSR at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.During the Soviet time he trained at Dynamo sports society in Klaipėda. He was a professional road cyclist from 1989 to 1991. Umaras achieved several world records: in 1984 he broke the record in men's 5 km individual pursuit; in 1985, 1986, and 1987 – in men's 4 km individual pursuit; and in 1988 – in men's 4 km team pursuit
