  1. Life Cycle of a Plant Ms. Rene StachuraSummer 2011

  2. What do you know about the life of a plant? Where do plants come from? What is the purpose of a flower? Why do some plants grow fruit?

  3. A plant starts with a seed… • A seed may be small like a grain of sand, or as large as a coconut! • Seeds come in many different colors and textures. • Seeds contain food for a new plant. • What are some seeds you eat?

  4. Seed Coat • The outside of a seed has a special covering called a seed coat. • Like a coat protects us, a seed coat keeps the seed safe and moist.

  5. What does a Seed need to Grow? • Water A plant needs to drink. • Sunshine A plant needs warmth and also needs sunlight to make its own food. • Air A plant turns carbon dioxide into oxygen. • Soil A plant needs nutrients from soil.

  6. Seedlings • If a seed has everything it needs to grow, a seedling will form. • A seedling is a seed with a stem. The seedling will grow bigger and bigger. http://www.buzzle.com/articles/life-cycle-of-bean-plant.html

  7. Sprout • From the seedling small roots grown down into the soil. • Then, the stem grows up toward the surface. • Last, the stem pops up through the soil. When this happens it is called a sprout. • Can you name the sprout parts? (seed, stem, and roots) http://www.buzzle.com/articles/life-cycle-of-bean-plant.html

  8. Leaves • When the leave start to form on the stem it is a baby plant. • This plant can make its own food and no longer needs the food within the seed. • Leaves turn sunshine + water + carbon dioxide into food for the plant. http://www.buzzle.com/articles/life-cycle-of-bean-plant.html Sunshine + Water + Carbon dioxide = plant food

  9. Flowers • A flower grows on a plant. • The center of the flower contains a dusty pollen. • When insects, wind, and water move pollen from one plant to another it is called pollination. http://freewallpapersdekstop.blogspot.com/2011/04/apple-blossom-wallpapers_19.html

  10. Flowers • After the flower is pollinated, a fruit( like an apple) begins to grow. • Many animals like to eat the fruit that plants produce. • Do you recognize this type of plant? http://www.gardeningsite.com/fruit-trees/on-tending-apple-trees/

  11. Label the parts • Leaves • Roots • Flower • Fruit • Seeds • Stem http://www.youngbloodcoaching.com/karma-definition.html http://worksheetplace.com/index.php?function=DisplaySheet&sheet=Parts-of-a-plant-worksheet&links=2&id=&link1=241&link2=242
