  1. Girl Guides! By Celeste Bennier-Pittau

  2. What is Girl Guides? • Girl guides are like scouts, but just for girls. The Girl Guide trefoil is a bit like the Scout trefoil. Girl Guides is a world wide movement. There are many different units, Metros and Halls all around the world where any girls at any ages, background or religions can join. Also, there are 4 world centres based in 4 different countries. Our Chalet in Switzerland, Our Cabana in Mexico, Pax Lodge in England and Sangam in India.

  3. What do you do in Girl Guides? • In Girl Guides the aim is to have fun, learn new things, earn badges and help the community. You also go to a lot of events, activities, community events (Tree planting day, Clean up Australia day) and camps.

  4. What do you learn when you are a Girl Guide? • When you are a Girl Guide you learn to be a trusted member of the community. You also learn First Aid, house hold skills, life skills and how to respect people.

  5. Why and how did Girl Guides start? • Girl Guides are celebrating 100 years this year (2010). Girl Guide first started in 1910. Robert Baden-Powell was a retired army citizen, he wrote the book ‘Scouting for boys’, it was a world wide hit. Boys everywhere were creating groups with their neighbours and friends from school. Because of this, Robert Baden-Powell held a Scouting Rally at Crystal Palace, London. Thousands of boys turned up. To Roberts surprise, some girls turned up as well in their brothers hand-me-downs. Robert was shocked. He asked the girls what they were doing there. They replied “We want to be Girl Scouts! Girls can do everything boys can do!”. Robert asked his sister, Agnes Baden-Powell, to look after the girls, she said she would fit it in. That is how Girl Guides started.

  6. Do you earn badges like scouts do? • We do earn badges, we earn a lot. There are lots of different badges, nearly for everything. There are also lots of really big badges that you need to do a lot to earn. Like: Junior BP, BP, Queens and the new Centenary Badge.
