  1. 1ST CHOICE CONTINUING EDUCATION Updated Guidance for Cosmetology License Renewal According to the Texas Board of Cosmetology, cosmetologists must renew their licenses every two years from the issue date. The Texas State Board of Cosmetology requires you to renew your license every two years to continue practicing cosmetology in the state. Each type of license has its requirements for renewal, such as the operator's, specialist's, the hair weaver's, or instructor's license. The general rules for renewal, however, remain the same. The agency will conduct a criminal background check on all candidates for a license. Case-by-case, criminal convictions are evaluated. If your license has expired for less than 90 days, you can renew it by paying the department an additional fee of 1-1/2 times the usual renewal amount.
