Introduction: • The term amino plastics has been coined to cover range of resinous polymers produced by interaction of amines with aldehydes . • Formaldehyde is by far the primary aldehyde used. • The two most popular and amino resins are urea formaldehyde(UF) and melamine formaldehyde resin(MF).
RAW Materials of UF: • Urea is a white crystalline compound with a melting point of 132. • Urea is prepared commercially by the reaction of liquid carbon dioxide and ammonia.
Chemistry of UF Resins: Urea Formaldehyde Condensation • The reaicationUrea-formaldehyde resins are usually prepared by a two-stage reaction. • First stage involves the reaction of urea and formaldehyde under neutral or mildly alkaline conditions, leading to the production of mono and dimethylolureas
Chemistry of UF Resins: Urea Formaldehyde Condensation • The second stage is the acid condensation of the methylolureas, first to soluble, and then to insoluble cross-linked resins.
Raw materalis of melamine • Melamine formaldhyde is a hard thermosetting plastic material. • Made from melamine and formaldehyde by condenationpolymeraization. • Melamine (1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-triazine) was first prepared by Liebig in 1835
producing melamine : • from urea:
Melamine resin prepration produce: • The condensation reaction of melamine with formaldehyde . • formaldehyde first attacks the amino groups of melamine, forming methylol compounds. • Reaction of melamine with neutralised formaldehyde at about 80-100~ leads to the production of mixture of water-soluble methylolmelamines.
Further heating causes condensation of the methylolmelamines
Properties of urea &MELaMINe formaldehyde
Properties urea &MELMINeformaldehyde: MF : UF: Better color retention at higher temperatures. Better external durability. Good mechanical stress analysis. Good resistance to fire and heat. Less water absorption.. High surface hardness. Better scratch resistance. • Tensile strength and hardness are better than phonolics. • Thermal stability and quite good flame resistancIs • has better chemical resistance. • Transparentand colorless. • Excellent weather and Moisture resistance. • Very strength • Good electrical insulation properties with good resistance.
Disadvantages: UF MF High cost. brittlenss Poor resistance to strong acids. Weak restintace in oraginic solvents.. High mold shrinkage. Difficlut to stick. • Its ability to dissolve in water. • Urea releases harmfull pollutants during the manufacturing process. • Lower surface hardness. • It has effects in the manufacturing process. • High mold shrinkage.
Application and uses for UF: • Electrical and electronic products. • Used in agriculture as slow-release source of nitrogen. • In decorative laminates ,textiles ,paper ,wrinkle –resistant fabrics ,cotton ,blends and rayon. • As wood glue. • Handles for cooking utensils.
