  2. SUMMER TIME IS GOING ON NOW! The Valley offers so many exciting outdoor activities for both adults and kids over the next few months: summer camps, picnics, lake trips on the weekends, summer sports, beach vacations…the list keeps on.  It’s easy to get caught up in all the fun and forget to protect yourself from the sun. The doctors at Mahaveer Eye Hospital teamed up to provide insight about how to make sure you’re covered when the sun is at its brightest. Plus, we have a few tips for staying safe this summer!

  3. Every family member should have sunglasses. Kids’ eyes are more vulnerable to damage from the sun than adults’ eyes, so it’s important for family members of all ages to have well-fitting sunglasses with UV blocking lenses.

  4. Hats and tightly-woven clothing will add safeguarding. Wearing a hat whenever you’re outside will help safeguardyour eyes as well as the sensitive skin on your face. Clothes you can’t see through most likely won’t let the sun through either.

  5. Carry sunscreen with you at all times, and apply it again every two hours. Pocket-sized bottles will do the trick in a pinch, and you never want to be caught in the sun without sunscreen. And one layer won’t keep you protected all day. Reapply regularly — especially if you or your children have been in the water or taken part in a sweaty activity.

  6. Sunscreen provides the most universal protection, but no sunscreen will protect from 100% of UVA and UVB rays. Sun Protection Factor measures how well you’re protected from UVB rays – the ones that cause sunburn and damage the skin, but UVA rays can be just as dangerous.

  7. Sun protection is still important on cloudy days. Clouds only block 20% of UV rays, so sunscreen and sunglasses should be worn even on overcast days.
