IMMINENT DEATH PROCESSING WHAT IS IT? • Expeditious Retirement Procedures for Disability on a 24-hour Basis. • Generally, Financially Advantageous to NOK, Including Those of Soldiers With Over 20 Years. • Applicable to the Single Soldier (SBP “Insurable Interest” Option) • Applies to AC and to RC Soldiers With Duty Related Disabilities; But, Not on the TDRL. • Must Have Prognosis of Death Within 72 Hours.

  5. IMMINENT DEATH PROCESSING PHYSICIAN REQUIREMENTS/ACTIONS • Confirm Soldier Is Alive and Death Expected Within 72 Hours. • Alert PEBLO • Complete and Sign SF 502 (NARSUM). • Must Incl. Statement “Death Is Expected Within 72 Hours”. • Mental Disorders, Regardless of Etiology, Add Statement IAW AR 40-3, Para 7-8. • Mentally Competent for Pay Purposes? • Capable of Understanding and Cooperating with PEB? • Dangerous to Himself/Herself or to Others?

IMMINENT DEATH PROCESSING PEBLO REQUIREMENTS/ACTIONS • Contact and Counsel NOK on the Imminent Death • Alert PERSCOM Casualty and Memorial Affairs When LD Investigation Is Required.--LTC Steward, DSN 221-5314; Beeper 1-800-759-8888, PIN 1063965--Mr. Campbell, DSN 221-7575;Beeper 1-800-759-8888, PIN 115424 • Obtain Soldier’s or NOK’s Signature on the MEB • If Soldier Is Incompetent and NOK Cannot Be Located, OR • If Soldier or NOK Refuses to Sign MEB a Statement Will Be Prepared and Submitted w/MEB.

  7. IMMINENT DEATH PROCESSING PEBLO REQUIREMENTS/ACTIONS • Fax Completed MEB To PEB. Ensure The Following: -- DA Form 3947 Signed By DCCS Or By A Designee. -- NARSUM Contains Statement:“Death Is Expected Within 72 Hours” Note: MEB may be forwarded pending LOD

IMMINENT DEATH PROCESSING PEBLO REQUIREMENTS/ACTIONS • Upon Receipt of PEB Findings Counsel Soldier or NOK and Obtain Election. • May Be Done by Telephone With Preparation of MFR. • If Soldier or NOK Declines to Make an Election, Prepare Statement and Advise Soldier/NOK That Imminent Death Processing Is Terminated. • If Soldier Is Deemed Incompetent and NOK Cannot Be Located, the MTF Commander or His Designee Makes the Election on Behalf of the Soldier (AR 37-104-1, Para 9-21.) • FAX Election to PEB.

IMMINENT DEATH PROCESSING ISSUES • Are comatose soldiers deemed “incompetent”? • Is separate competence board required? • For purposes of meeting the requirement of AR 40-3, para 7-8a, is the following statement sufficient on comatose soldiers: “ Soldier is incompetent for pay purposes (in a coma)”?
