The Problem • Imminent and eligible deaths reported inconsistently • OPOs interpret the definitions differently • Brain death laws vary from state to state • “Multi-system organ failure” misinterpreted
Goal of the Proposal • Clear guidelines for identifying imminent and eligible deaths • Clear language throughout the definitions • Consistent data reporting
How the Proposal will Achieve its Goal • Eliminate multi-system organ failure (MSOF) as an exclusionary criterion for eligible • Add organ-specific exclusionary criteria • Restrict imminent deaths to those most likely to be classified as eligible had brain death been legally declared.
Impact • None on candidates • OPOs • Improve processes • Better identify donor potential
Expected Implementation • Anticipated Date of Board Consideration: June 2013 • Anticipated Effective Date: September 1, 2013
