Bus RADARSAT-2 • Status: • Bus at DFL since May 04 • Bus Functional tests successfully completed • Next step – TVAC Test • Bus to be moved in the testing area • S/C Bus TVAC began in December RADARSAT-1
SAR Payload – Sensor Electronics • Status: • Rework to fix the technical problems was successful • SE equipment on flight panel • Testing on-going • Delivered in December
SAR – Transmit/Receive Modules • Status: • Thales assembly complete • Finalizing testing & shipping • EMS production ramping up • Overall Statistics: • Assembled: 434 • Tested: 345 (Required: 512)

RADARSAT-2 Follow-on Options • RADARSAT-2 type satellite: for launch by 2012 with modifications for technology obsolescence; • Low-cost/small-sat SAR: demonstration mission in 2009 (SSS-DM), followed by constellation of 3 small SARs (400 kg range) launched in 2012, 2015 and 2018; possible acceleration funding permitting.
Option 1 – RADARSAT-2 Type • Possible launch in 2012 • Approach: develop “RSAT-3” using same approach as RSAT-2, with technology modifications due to obsolescence • Performance: identical to RSAT-2 • Includes: • Cost of satellite dependent on approach (fast clone with some obsolescence issues vs. new technology); • Delta-2 launch. • Users: same as RSAT-2, but does not provide performance evolution of system or technology.
Option 2 – Low-cost/small-sat SAR • Constellation of 4 SmallSatSAR over 14 years, including SSS-DM and 3 additional satellites launched in 2009, 2012, 2015, 2018; • Approach: demonstration mission (SSS-DM) launched in 2009 followed by 3 satellites launched over 6 years; possibility of accelerating launches (to 2012) or adding satellites; • Performance: possible trade-offs required on RADARSAT-2 performance (TBD); several satellites offer more revisits and more reliable system; • Includes: • Space segment for 4 satellites • Launch for 4 satellites • Users: same as RSAT-1, plus increased government interest (DND and allies, Coast Guard, DFO, Transport Canada)

RADARSAT-2 Follow-on Next Steps • Continue development of critical technology; • Define user requirements in terms of applications, information requirements and product delivery timeliness (revisit, swath width, resolution, SAR modes, polarisation, left/right looking, GMTI); • Define mission requirements (key mission drivers, system architecture and trade-offs); • Perform mission feasibility studies; • Develop partnership options (international and commercial);
A cooperative post-launch program sponsored by RADARSAT International, Canada Centre for Remote Sensing and the Canadian Space Agency, known as collaborators. Mandate: To further the advancement of RADARSAT-2 applications in areas where the system strengths provide unique advantage. Emphasis will be placed on: “Making the scientifically possible operationally practical.” Science and Operational Applications Research (SOAR) Program
The program will provide a limited quantity of data for early research and development to Canadian and international organizations to apply for RADARSAT-2 Advanced Modes data specifically: for current anchor clients, to test new capabilities within their current operations; for researchers, to increase our knowledge on polarimetry potential opportunities, information extraction procedures and product development; for value-added community and strategic partners, to both ensure continuity of current product lines with new RADARSAT-2 features AND develop new products. SOAR Sub-Programs: • Improvements to Existing Operational Applications • The focus of this sub-program is to explore the enhanced features of RADARSAT-2 and their capacity to improve upon existing operationally successful RADARSAT-1/SAR applications and markets; • New Commercial Applications • The focus of this sub-program is to identify new commercial opportunities that may be addressed with the system enhancements of RADARSAT-2; • Research and Development of New Applications • The focus of this sub-program is on characterizing the new modes of RADARSAT-2, such as the fully polarimetric modes, and on identifying new applications and market opportunities for these modes.
