Task Force History • Created under auspices of the Lompoc Chamber of Commerce’s Military Affairs Committee in 2003 • Consists of veterans, community leaders, elected official representatives and interested community members • Whose goal is to provide a National Cemetery for California’s Central Coast Veterans
California Central Coast needs a LOCAL National Cemetery Service members who die while on active duty and veterans are eligible for burial in a national cemetery. Spouse & minor children are eligible to be buried with their sponsor. Today’s veterans number 24 million: 9+ million, mostly WW II and Korean War vets, forecast to die by 2033 1600 WW II (our “greatest generation”) veterans die every day No national cemetery within 100 driving miles of Central Coast cities
Criteria to Qualify for a VA National Cemetery • No National Cemetery within 75 mile radius. • Newest Bakersfield VA Cemetery (East of Arvin) is outside of the 75 mile radius. • Veteran population of 80,000 within 75 mile radius. • VA estimate for San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties averages 100,000. • Major metropolitan areas • Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, Lompoc, San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, Ventura, Oxnard

National Cemetery burial saves Veterans’ families $$ in their time of grief When a National Cemetery burial is not available, a Veteran’s family bear the burden of burial costs. For example, these are the 2008 costs for a burial in the Lompoc Cemetery.
