  1. European Explorers of the New World A look at the explorations of: Christopher Columbus Juan Ponce de Leon Jacques Cartier Christopher Newport Click on buttons at the bottom of each screen to move around.

  2. European Exploration • During the late 1400’s to early 1600’s, Spain, England, and France all tried to find a western sea passage that led to Asia. Instead they found a whole “new world” that had much to offer each country.

  3. What We’ll Learn • We’ll learn who sponsored (provided money and supplies) the explorers’ journeys. • Some of the motivations for sailing. • The accomplishments (successes) in exploration of the New World.

  4. Christopher Columbus • Sponsors: the king and queen of Spain • Motivations: to find a western sea route to Asia, to find riches, and claim land for Spain • Accomplishments: discovered New World exploring Santo Domingo and Venezuela for others to explore

  5. Juan Ponce de Leon • Sponsors: King and Queen of Spain • Motivations: to claim new land for Spain, find riches, and the Fountain of Youth • Accomplishments: founded St. Augustine, FL and first governor of Puerto Rico

  6. Jacques Cartier • Sponsor: King of France • Motivations: to claim new land for France and find western sea route to Asia • Accomplishments: named St. Lawrence River, Quebec, and Montreal, and started a rich fur trade

  7. Christopher Newport • Sponsors: King of England and the VA Company • Motivations: claim new land for England, find riches, and find a western sea route to Asia • Accomplishments: started 1st permanent English settlement (Jamestown) and sailed to the Fall Line near present-day Richmond

  8. SOL Review • Each explorer wanted to find a western sea route to Asia to find riches and spices. • Each explorer wanted to claim new land for their countries. • Columbus is credited with discovering the New World (although he never knew it). • Ponce de Leon founded the oldest city in America-St. Augustine, FL. • Jamestown, VA is the first permanent English settlement in the New World founded by Christopher Newport. • Cartier founded the St. Lawrence River, Quebec, and Montreal. • Newport sailed to the Fall Line near present-day Richmond and named Jamestown and the James River after King James I of England.
