What is Afterschool? • Afterschool Programs provide a safe, caring and nurturing place for extended learning, academic, social, recreational, and personal life skills development for students during non-school hours.

Afterschool • offers a broad array of additional services, programs, and activities* that are designed to reinforce and complement the regular academic program of participating students. *This includes youth development activities, drug and violence prevention, counseling, art, music, recreation, technology, homework assistance, tutoring and character education.
Afterschool… • Goes by many names: • Before and After-school • School Age Care • 21st Century Community Learning Centers • Latchkey • Adventure Club • Homework Assistance, Tutoring, etc
Quality staffing Coordinated learning with regular school day. Linking school-day and afterschool staff. Appropriate environments; enough space and materials. Goals for a High-Quality Afterschool Program

Afterschool is not the same as the traditional school day. The time is flexible and can be adapted from day to day to meet program needs. However, Afterschool should work with the classroom teacher if improving academics is important.
