  2. Olympic Ideals • The aim of the Olympics is to promote: • Personal excellence • Sport as education • Cultural exchange • Mass participation • Fair play • International understanding

  4. 1936 Berlin • Hitler used the games to show off Nazi power. • Hans Woellke won gold in shot putt and was paraded. • American Jesse Owens won four gold medals, Hitler was disgusted and left.

  5. 1956 Melbourne • Weeks before Britain and France invaded Egypt. • Egypt, Iran and Lebanon withdrew. • China also withdrew because Taiwan had entered a team. • Spain, Holland and Switzerland withdrew because the Soviet Union had invaded Hungary.

  6. 1968 Mexico City • Before the games all the homeless were cleared so that visitors would not see them. • While the world watched on the Olympics on TV, over 300 rioting students were shot dead by soldiers.

  7. 1972 Munich • Palestinian terrorists broke into the Olympic village and took 9 Israeli’s hostage. • After a failed rescue attempt the hostages were shot. • Officials and athletes wanted to abandon the games, but they continued.

  8. 1976 Montreal • Canadian government made big plans but the money ran out. • The opening ceremony happened in an un-finished stadium. • Montreal is still paying off the debt.

  9. 1980 Moscow • The Soviet Union Invaded Afghanistan in December 1979. • In protest, West Germany, Kenya, Japan, Canada and America boycotted the games.

  10. 1984 Los Angeles • First to be completely funded by sponsorship and sale of broadcast rights. • It made $215m profit. • Russia boycotted games to pay back US for Moscow in 1980.

  11. 1988 Seoul • North Korea wanted to stage some events but IOC refused. • In response they and four of its allies boycotted the games.

  12. 1992 Barcelona • No-one boycotted the games. • Made a small profit. • South Africa sent a team for the first time in 60 years. • East and West Germany combined to form a single team for the first time since 1964.
