Census 2011 • Census Day is May 10, 2011 • 10 questions • Basic demographics • 2 language questions contained in the 2006 long-form questionnaire • Delivered to every dwellings in Canada (more than 15 million private dwellings) • Collection starting May 2
National Household Survey (NHS) • The NHS is a new voluntary survey encompassing all of the questions planned to be in the 2011 Census long form • Delivered to 4.5 million sampled households nationally by internet in May or by mail in early June • Reference Day will be the same as the Census - May 10, 2011 • Can be completed online or on the paper questionnaire mailed to sampled households

Why is this data important • The Census and the National Household Survey are the main sources of data for smaller regions and populations • Data on population trends • The Census is mandated by the Constitution Act and the Statistics Act • The basis for transfer payments: $300 billion over the past five years • Realignment of electoral boundaries (decennial census)
