Most patients in the emergency situation need oxygen therapy e.g. CPR Cardiac Conditions Lung Disease Major Trauma Head Injuries Unconscious Patient Acute Asthma Epilepsy CVA Shortness of Breath Carbon Monoxide Poisoning or other Toxins Indications Community First Responder
Contraindications • Paraquat Poisoning (Weed killer) • O2 increases damage to the lungs • Hyperventilation • O2 Doesn’t harm, doesn’t help either Community First Responder
Administration • In an emergency situation, give 100% through a non-rebreather mask • Show caution in patients with chronic lung disease • Monitor the patient, don’t withhold O2 from a patient who may need it. Community First Responder
S A F E T Y No Smoking! • Oil or grease must not come into contact with oxygen equipment • Risk of compression ignition • Avoid running the cylinder empty (Exchange cylinders with ambulance crews) Community First Responder
