3. Talon is a dynamic, highly adaptable and scalable knowledge management solution that enables the user to move from situational awareness to situational understanding. Talon enables trend analysis, risk analysis and risk mitigation and to complete this cycle constantly and iteratively.
Talon provides the right information at the right time. Talon leverages a rules-based engine that automatically filters, sorts and displays various data based on a user’s indicated needs
Talon is adaptable for different customers and environments. Talon’s distributed architecture and pluggable interfaces support a wide variety of data sources, applications and plug-ins that can be adapted for many different user interfaces.
Talon is as ubiquitous and powerful as the user’s imagination. Talon provides a changeable, adaptive and intelligent software package that is easily customizable with a graphically-based Rules Authoring Tool (RAT).

13. Current COP Interface This is a screenshot of a battalion level deployment in Iraq through the CPOF interface. Spot reports of enemy activity and potential IEDs are coming in, but the key is that this map is messy. Commanders rely on soldiers in their TOC to analyze what is happening on the screen and how it affects friendly units. If it isn’t a quiet neighborhood, this map is going to fill up with red pretty quickly. 14. TALON Filtering TALON lets you filter your digital battlefield to see what you want to see. Note that only the elements of Alpha Company are on display now. You can toggle different efforts however you want. Understand that TALON is a rules engine so any rule you can come up with – any field in a repository – can be set as a filter. For example, you could say have it show you everyone who has a full ammo load, or show you who’s running out of fuel, or who has been in country for less than one month. The current digital environment does not provide any method for associating actions with each other. A sniper report will generate a map icon, but that’s it. A commander relies on analysts to pore over the battlemap and interpret actions and events that may have a relationship to each other. TALON automates this. The drag and drop interface on the left is the particular ruleset that our company commander is choosing to look at. Note that the 4th squad in the lower left is highlighted yellow, and the 2nd squad in the upper center quadrant is highlighted red. If this were in real time, you would see 4th squad moving towards the reported IED; TALON is associating their route with a projected threat and targeting that unit as at risk. The red squad has moved within an area of reported sniper fire. TALON pulls that unit up on the filter display as threatened and colors them appropriately on the map. This kind of trend or threat analysis depends on someone piecing the puzzle together and making connections. TALON automates this process, and can graphically, or locationally depict hot spots. The supreme advantage of this kind of statistical corroborating lies in its ability to consolidate any feed into a tactical picture larger than immediate circumstances. For example, lets presume that a unit rotation is taking place, Alpha Company is moving out, and these spot reports are just a filed statistic in a data repository. New commanders coming in rely on an outbriefing by their predecessor to familiarize them with the environment, and their units have few tools on hand to capitalize on the experiences of the outgoing units.
