New Jersey The Garden State The colonies founder was John Berkeley and George Carteret New Jersey was owned by England. Charles II gave his brother, Duke of York whom was also King James II the region between New England and Maryland. King James II granted the land between the Hudson River and The Delaware River to two friends, George and John.
