  2. WHAT IS A VERB? A VERB is a word that shows action or being. Whatever you are doing can be shown by a verb. • It can also be a STATE OF BEING Remember: • Some Verbs do not show action. Like : is, are, am,was, were, has, have, had

  3. VERB TENSE SHOWS TIME • VERBS can show the TIME of the action or condition they express. • This time which a verb expresses is called the TENSE • The TENSE tells you when the action takes place.

  4. TENSES OF VERBS VERBS HAVE THREE BASIC TENSE; • The present tense- actions which happens now or all the time • The past tense– actions which have already happened (in the past) • The future tense– actions which are yet to happen or take place

  5. SUBJECT VERB AGREEMENT • When working with verbs remember the relationship with the SUBJECT (NOUN or PRONOUN)doing the action or VERB) • VERBS also show us if the ACTION is being done by one (SINGULAR) or more than one (PLURAL) subject. • This is called the SUBJECT – VERB AGREEMENT

  6. PRESENT TENSE – TYPES • Tells what happens “now” • Tells what happens “all the time” ( daily, often, routine, repeated) • Tells what is “truth/fact”

  7. EXAMPLE OF ACTIONS THAT HAPPENS “NOW” Wewatch as Ms. Kale takes the sword and fights the beast.

  8. EXAMPLE OF REPEATED ACTION - “HAPPENS ALL THE TIME” Everyday, Amandavisits Summer’s Sweet Shop on her way home.

  9. EXAMPLE OF ACTIONS/STATES THAT TELLS “TRUTH/FACT” Port of Spain is the capital of Trinidad and Tobago.

  10. EXAMPLE OF ACTIONS/STATES THAT TELLS “TRUTH/FACT” • The Sun rises in the east and set in the west.

  11. ADDITIONAL THINGS PRESENT TENSE TELLS US • Tells the feelings we have “now” • Tells the events that “will happen in the near future.”

  12. EXAMPLE OF ACTION THAT TELLS THE FEELING WE HAVE “NOW” I hate Mathematics . I hate Maths

  13. EXAMPLE OF ACTION THAT WILL “HAPPEN IN THE NEAR FUTURE” The movie starts at eight o’clock tonight.

  14. EXAMPLES OF PRESENT TENSE • My sister teachesat Lucia’s Private School. • The world isround. • I takea car to school every day. • My friend hasa mole on her cheek.

  15. Subject Verb Agreement/Concord Singular Subject: Verbshave “s” or “es” at the end of the Verb Plural Subjects :Verbs hasno “s’ or “es” at the end of the Verb

  16. The Present Tense has TWO forms The singular form ( with an “s” or “es”The plural form ( no “s” or “es”)

  20. Choose the correct PRESENT TENSE VERB to complete the sentence.

  21. Most of the time, the present tense of an action verb is the root word of the verb. If the subject is a singular noun or the pronoun he, she, or it, add an s or an es at the end of the verb.
