1 How to Choose a Research Topic for Ph.D? The most difficult thing for Ph.D students perhaps is to choose a good research topic on which they have to work for long years. Ph.D students are expected to select their topics by their own; so, students often get confused while selecting a challenging topic on their area of interest. Students need to develop a good research question because this is the ultimate thing that impacts the whole research experience. Selecting a worthy research topic enhances the root to academic success. While choosing the right research topic, students should take care of these following factors- Area that interests you: The first criterion to choose your research topic is to select the area that interests you all through. Since you have to go into the depth of a topic while conducting your research, unless you choose an area of your interest, you will get bored in a year and can’t continue it for long. Therefore, always go for a topic for which you have immense interest. Topic that generates value: While navigating various interesting ideas, it is necessary to strike the right cord between interest and importance. Importance of any topic depends on the societal needs and extent of value creation. Funding agencies generally fund meaningful research proposals based on relevance. Perform a literature survey: Before finalizing a research topic, you should take a brief look at the existing literature body to gain a depth of understanding. If you conduct a careful literature survey, you may easily find the literature gap based on which you can form your research question. Forming a significant research question is imperative to good research.
2 Take advisor’s help: Students should brainstorm their topic after talking to advisors, experts, teachers, and senior scholars at the initial stage. Advisors can help them come on a decisionon a particular topic. Relevant research question: Research question must be relevant and right to make students focused and motivating towards their research. Meaningful research question is the key to meaningful discovery. Here, is a list of 11 questions that you should consider to choose a research question- 1.Can you ardently pursue it? 2.Can you sustain your curiosity all through your research? 3.Does the problem have a solution? 4.Is it worthy to pursue? 5.Will it generate problems for future research? 6.Does it have a manageable size? 7.What is the prospective for contributing originality to the literature in that area? 8.Will the scholars in the filed receive your solution well? 9.Are you competent enough to solve it? 10.Will the solution demonstrate your independent skill? 11.Will the research prepare you for an area of challenge in future?
