By harnessing these technologies, companies can enhance efficiency, reduce errors, and ultimately improve customer satisfaction. Demand Forecasting Accurate demand forecasting is crucial for effective supply chain management. By understanding customer demand patterns, businesses can minimize excess inventory and reduce shortages. Predictive analytics and machine learning models can help in generating accurate forecasts based on historical data, market trends, and various external factors. With better demand forecasting, companies can align their production and distribution strategies to meet customer needs effectively while reducing carrying costs and wastage. Supplier Collaboration Collaborating closely with suppliers is another key strategy for streamlining supply chain operations. By establishing strong relationships and open communication channels with suppliers, companies can gain more visibility into their upstream processes. This, in turn, helps in reducing lead times, ensuring quality control, and minimizing disruptions. Implementing Vendor-Managed Inventory (VMI) systems or Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) platforms can enhance collaboration and create a win-win situation for both parties. 18 19 www.ciolook.com |October 2023 | www.ciolook.com | October 2023 |
Inventory Optimization Risk Management Excess inventory ties up capital and leads to storage costs, while insufficient inventory can result in stockouts and missed sales opportunities. To streamline supply chain operations, companies need to strike a balance between these two extremes. Inventory optimization tools can help businesses determine the right stock levels by considering factors like lead times, demand variability, and service level requirements. Implementing just-in-time (JIT) or lean inventory management practices can further reduce carrying costs and enhance efficiency. A resilient supply chain is a streamlined one. Companies should identify and mitigate risks in their supply chains to prevent disruptions. This includes assessing risks related to geopolitical factors, natural disasters, transportation, and supplier dependencies. Developing contingency plans and diversifying sourcing options can help minimize risks and ensure a more agile supply chain. Sustainability and Environmental Responsibility Today, sustainability is more than a buzzword; it's a fundamental aspect of supply chain operations. Sustainable practices not only reduce the environmental footprint but can also cut costs and enhance brand reputation. Streamlining supply chain operations should encompass sustainability efforts, such as green logistics, recycling, and the use of eco- friendly packaging materials. Transportation Efficiency Optimizing transportation is a critical aspect of supply chain operations. Businesses must focus on efficient route planning, load optimization, and mode selection. Technology-driven solutions, such as Transportation Management Systems (TMS), can assist in optimizing the movement of goods. Besides enhancing cost- efficiency, well-planned transportation strategies also reduce carbon footprints, contributing to sustainability efforts. Data Analytics and Performance Metrics Data is a valuable asset for supply chain optimization. Companies should collect, analyze, and leverage data to gain insights into their supply chain operations. By establishing key performance indicators (KPIs), businesses can track the success of their optimization efforts. Metrics like on-time delivery, order accuracy, and inventory turnover can help evaluate supply chain performance and guide improvements. Warehouse Management The role of warehouses in supply chain operations is evolving. Modern warehouses are no longer just storage facilities; they serve as distribution hubs and centers for value-added services. To streamline operations, warehouses should be organized for efficient storage and picking. Warehouse management systems (WMS) and automation technologies, like robotics and RFID, can improve order accuracy, reduce order processing times, and minimize labor costs. Companies must continuously explore ways to streamline their supply chain operations to remain agile, efficient, and responsive to customer demands. The adoption of technology, data-driven decision- making, collaboration with suppliers, and a focus on sustainability are some of the key strategies that can make a significant difference in achieving a well- optimized supply chain. Embracing these approaches will not only improve operational efficiency but also contribute to a company's overall success in the marketplace. By implementing these strategies, businesses can navigate the challenges of the modern supply chain landscape with confidence and resilience. Continuous Improvement Supply chain optimization is not a one-time effort but an ongoing process. Adopting continuous improvement methodologies, such as Lean or Six Sigma, can help identify inefficiencies and waste in the supply chain. Regular assessments and performance metrics can reveal areas that need improvement. Companies should encourage a culture of continuous improvement and empower employees to suggest and implement changes. 20 www.ciolook.com |October 2023 |

Mike Bassani Empowering Businesses Through Dataverse Brilliance T What is your professional background and how did you start working in the field of supply chain management? oday's technology landscape incorporates innovation as the heartbeat and adaptability as the key, Mike Bassani is an emerging leader whose vision transcends boundaries and transforms aspirations into tangible achievements. I didn't grow up in logistics or have a family member in the industry—my journey is one where I came to admire the supply chain when I was working in another domain. Specifically, when I was working at the head office of Best Buy Canada, I was able to see the 'pre- showrooming' and the subsequent effect online retail was having on the business. Mike works on the intricacies of Artificial Intelligence intertwining seamlessly with the artistry of Product Development. A world where Leadership isn't just a role, but a guiding philosophy, where Recruiting isn't merely a task, but a strategic endeavor and where Teamwork isn't a buzzword, but the essence of progress. A lightbulb went off around the way in which the supply chain (in contrast to the traditional marketing or sales message) was the true competitive differentiator in commerce. As I began to unpack it and subsequently focus my Master's on this, I was able to apply the theory to the problem and it became the area where I was able to accomplish some of my best professional achievements. Within the hallowed halls of Microsoft, Mike assumes the role of Partner and General Manager, steering the ship of the Dataverse organization. Here, the mission isn't just to innovate—it's to revolutionize. It's about enabling the Power Platform, the very heartbeat of modern enterprises. Could you share some key milestones or career highlights that have led you to your current position at Microsoft? Leading a team of exceptional minds, Mike's vision extends far beyond the ordinary. His team is not just tasked with Copilot integration and plug-ins—they are architects of the future. They delve into the intricate realms of technology, carving pathways for seamless integration of AI, making what was once complex, elegantly simple. The goal is not just to create business applications—it's to craft experiences that resonate, applications that aren't just used but adored. I think the highlights of my career have always been on the projects that involved the most complexity and interaction with products, technology and people. I think there were some amazing free cashflow wins while running the US Pets Operations. I had a hallway conversation at an industry conference about this last month—Pet Care is a special category where you have fast-moving items (food), heavy bulky (Cat trees), seasonal (pet costumes), low ASP (cat litter or dog toys), expiration product (Food) and technology (remote fences and feeders). What sets Mike apart isn't just his technical acumen, though undoubtedly profound. It's his ability to see beyond the lines of code and spreadsheets, to recognize the pulse of the market and to lead in a way that isn't just about management, but mentorship. Mike Bassani Partner and General Manager Microso? Let's delve into a saga of dedication, innovation and leadership! I believe if you can handle the multi-faced area of Pets, you get a great cross-section of the industry and I really grew to love the passion people have in that area. 22 23 www.ciolook.com |October 2023 | www.ciolook.com | October 2023 |

Now, I'm not sure that Pet-related career wins led me to MSFT, but rather the ability to tackle the complexity of challenges and take some of my technical background along with domain expertise and apply it. Then you factor in the SKU breakout across products, the needs of global distribution, the breadth of supplier mix and the commitment to sustainability. If we just treated it as 'a single supply chain' we would fail. The autonomy, technology and expertise of the people in the various areas is what allows each group to optimize for the best outcome. It is worth acknowledging that my network is my best asset here. I'm very blessed to have mentors in many different capacities who help me prepare for the challenges today as well as give me guidance on how to architect my next professional adventures. How would you describe your leadership style and what core principles or values guide your approach to leadership in the field of supply chain management? What roles do platforms play in the supply chain? Leadership often involves mentoring and developing the next generation of leaders. How do you identify and nurture talent within your team? I think they are critical—acknowledged or not, every company is running some type of platform for their decision-making and analysis. Some are deliberate about their choice (cloud, cutting-edge SaaS solutions, localized builds) while others just operate with what they have. In my experience speaking with the technology and supply chain leaders, if you are not being thoughtful about the decision of how to bring together components of plan/source/maker/deliver/return through your technology stack it can really hinder your ability to evolve with business needs. Growing up in Canada with parents who had a large majority of their family who lived overseas (Europe) demonstrated the importance of staying connected for me, even at far distances and during busy times. My parents were high school teachers and I think grade school teaching is one of the most important professions in our society. Being able to see their connections with their students, how they created energy and balancing when to push for more effort have stood with me in my managerial career. Working with teams comprised of people with different skill sets and backgrounds is one of the most rewarding parts of my role. Leading, developing and learning with the team is how I see a majority of my role. I try to follow a mantra of 'what gets rewarded gets done' and then try to use some consideration of the human condition in how I motivate the team. Not everyone wants to be a manager and not everyone should be, so finding space to let people do their best work without saddling them with corporate 'box-ticking' is often one area I try to be creative. I've kept a few various principles with me but one I'll explain here is "the standard you walk by is the standard you set." This can be in business results, bug bashes, team meetings, or any public forum. People will take cues from the leadership and if you let quality slide, or you don't call out nefarious behavior, that stuff can be contagious. The alternative is also true—if you are able to set clear expectations on delivery, people like recognition and want to be on the right side of it, which spins the flywheel in the right direction. I'm thrilled to see some of the work teams have done in the Power Platform around citizen development and low code being enablers for people up and down the supply chain. Low code is exciting, but the next wave of Copilot and Generative AI is going to materially change how we organize which people oversee what work. " I hold 'ask me anything' and org-wide all hands on a regular basis so I can keep the communication flow across the levels as direct and transparent as possible. I continue to evolve as a leader and feel very blessed to have many team members who made career decisions to stay with my transitions between organizations and companies over the years. Boxes will still go on trucks and physical movement remains key, but I believe the democratization of decision-making will move from central control towers into a more disaggregated command center, something that's only been possible due to the cloud computing power developed over the last ~8 years. I've taken over a few different organizations and charters over my tenure and each one has its own challenges. One principle I like from the 'First 90 days' talks about avoiding the 'action imperative' which is just about taking time to listen and observe before implementing sweeping changes. Microsoft is a global tech giant. Could you provide insights into the scale and complexity of Microsoft's supply chain operations? How do you personally stay updated on industry trends and leadership practices to ensure your leadership remains effective and relevant? Staying connected in the industry can be difficult, especially where there are so many technical shifts underway. It's not just the supply chain but also the product evolutions. I definitely see the next breed of Chief Supply Chain Operators will be a mix of Operators and Product leaders. There is simply too much system design thinking to rely solely on your CIO. Working with teams comprised of people with different skill sets and backgrounds is one of the most rewarding parts of my role. " MSFT is an extremely complex business and our supply chain has to support that. I'm not sure it gets as much credit as it should for the complexity that goes on since people see us as the company that builds enterprise software like Office and Teams. The reality is that XBOX, MS Surface and Azure Datacentres alone would be extremely complex systems if they were independent, let alone all part of one company. From that aspect, I try to mix technology research and publications with domain-focused conferences and peer groups. I take part in a group called the Visibility Council which also connects individuals from around the world on common topics and to discuss specific problems. 24 25 www.ciolook.com |October 2023 | www.ciolook.com | October 2023 |
