Electricity! By Denzel and Jessica
Electricity • Atoms have protons, neutrons, and electrons. • Same number of protons and electrons, it is balanced and neutral • Sometimes electrons get knocked out of place – free electrons • If they go to where other electrons are missing, this creates a current of electricity!
Static Electricity! • Charge that stays on an object • When something gives up or gains electrons • Does not move along a wire or other conductor
Current Electricity! • Electric charges are called electric current. • Free electrons continuously move to spaces where electrons are missing.
Examples • Light bulbs • Cars • Computers
Conductors • A conductor is a material that current can pass through easily
Examples • Metal • Paper clips • Silverware • Wires • Water
Open-Closed Circuits • If a switch is opened electrons stay still. No electricity moves. • If a switch is closed electrons move and energy is released.
Parallel-Series Circuits • The series move in a circle • The parallel circuit moves in a straight line • The parallel series moves in a straight line and in a circle
Chemical • Chemical changes cause energy • Batteries • Glow sticks • Pop Rocks
Mechanical • Generator • Robots • Trains • Windmill • Motorcycles
Nonconductors • Do not allow electricity to pass through easily • Insulators • Rubber • Plastic • Glass
Household Electricity • What are some types of household electricity? • Cords • Computers • TV • Microwave • Stove
Safe Use Of Electricity • Don’t pull cords • Don’t put metal in an electrical appliance
