What is Herpetology? Study of reptiles and amphibians Includes: Snakes Lizards Crocodilians Turtles/Tortoises Frogs/Toads Salamanders Caecilians
Herps As Pets Lizards and snakes are the most popular herps to keep as pets. Herps are less common as pets in general because people often fear them because they are so different from the average furry pets, and also because they have many specific requirements in regards to husbandry.
Lizards Popular lizard species: Bearded Dragon Leopard Geckos Iguanas
Bearded Dragons Housing: • Minimum 40gal tank • UVA/UVB lighting with red night bulb • Basking spot of 105o F • Substrate such as reptibark, repticarpet, or sand. Diet: • Young: 80% insects, 20% veggies • Adult: 40% insects, 60% veggies • Ideal foods: crickets, mealworms, superworms, cabbage, greens (collards, mustards, turnip).
Leopard Geckos Housing: • 10 – 20gal tank with a hide box • Heat lamp for 80-90o basking spot • Under the tank heating pad • Substrate such as aspen, reptibark, repticarpet, or sand. Diet: • Insects (crickets, mealworms, etc)
Iguanas Housing: • Custom caging for 6 foot lizard (adult size) • Full spectrum heat lighting (90 – 100o basking spot) • Climbing space Diet: - Veggies
Snakes Popular snake species: Corn Snake Ball Python
Corn Snakes Housing: • 20 – 30 gal tank • Optional heat pad for warm spot of 75-80o • Temps should not get below 60 • Hide Diet: - Appropriately sized mice (approx 1.5x the width of the widest part of the snake)
Ball Pythons Housing: • 20 - 30 gal tank • Heating pad on one side of the tank • Hide box Diet: - Mice or Rats
Frogs Popular species: Tree frogs Firebelly Toads
Frogs Housing: • 10 – 20gal tank (depending on • number of frogs) • High humidity, • basking light • Swimming area (firebellies) Diet: • Crickets • Fruit flies (small frogs like dart frogs) • Mice (for Broccoli)
Turtles and Tortoises Turtles Tortoises
Turtles Housing • Aquatic needs large tank for swimming with filter, plus basking spot on land • Terrestrial need appropriately sized tank with basking spot Diet: - Depends on species, but ranges from meat to insects to veggies
Tortoises Housing: • Range all sizes of tanks depending on size • Adults too big to fit in tanks • Basking spot (full range radiation) Diet: - Predominantly veggies
Other Herps as Pets • REALLY big lizards ex: tegus, monitors • Arboreal boas ex: amazon tree boas, green tree pythons - Crocodilians • Venomous • REALLY large snakes ex: retics, burms
REALLY big lizards Monitors • Get up to 10.5 feet, 50 lbs (water monitor) • Can have really nasty temperaments Tegus • 4.5 feet, 30lbs • Probably the most docile pet lizard
Arboreal Boas Very beautiful, but more of a display snake. Can be nippy.
Crocodilians Huge and might eat you
Venemous Beautifully deadly
REALLY big snakes - Burmese pythons, anacondas, retics • 20+ feet long • Some are mean, some are nice. Hopefully you get lucky SONNY!!!
