  1. PRE-CONFERENCE ON AUDIO EDUCATION • 2006 • June 28-29 • Piteå Sweden

  2. Session 5 • What do Employers expect from Audio Graduates?

  3. Report from a meeting with Swedish Employers from the audio domain in Stockholm, February 2006 • What do they expect from graduates of the Department of Music and Media LTU? • Rendering correctly the outcome of this meeting is essential when we want to revise our curriculum

  4. Participants in this meeting: • -Swedish Television • -National Touring Theatre • -Swedish Broadcasting Company (Radio) • -ESP - Europe Sound Production (Film sound) • -2 students from LTU

  5. Discussions resulted in the following: • We should produce multi-competent graduates who are trained to do enterprising(entrepreneur), public address, surround sound in live broadcast for TV, Theatre, radio and Public adress

  6. Problems: • - Relevance of our courses to the real world, to the demand of the employers • - Rapid equalizing & mixing procedure 5.1/stereo(demand from the employers in the broadcast domain) • - Little or no training within broadcast companies • - If a graduate has the intention to work within the broadcast domain, how can he/she get enough practice /gain experience?

  7. - We do not educate for a specific task as a sound engineer, but for a wide variety of possible functions. Basic audio knowledge is a corner stone. • -We educate multi competence in theory, not in practice because of the time factor. Each course is only 5 credits. • -Experience is achieved only after a long period of exercise

  8. Status of a normal graduate: • -Habit of doing overdubs in a studio environment • -Good theoretical knowledge of audio • -Good aquaintance of several domains of audio • -Timeconsuming mixing procedure • -Lack of experience in equalizing, ear training? • -Use little or no compression, ear training? • -Not enough live recordings, not sufficiently trained in solving problems with leakage and restricted placement of microphones. • How can we improve the situation?

  9. Questions?

  10. Thank you for listening. • Guess what? • Let us listen to the next guy…
