Chapter 3 Interpreting Remainders 6.C.1.a Multiply whole numbers 6.C.1.b Divide whole numbers 6.C.1.c Interpret quotients and remainders mathematically and in the context of a problem 3.A.1.a Use technology tools, including software and hardware, from a range of teacher-selected options to learn new content or reinforce skills.
Interpreting the remainder: • Sometimes only use the quotient and ignore the remainder. • Sometimes the remainder is part of the answer. • Sometimes you add 1 to the quotient.
A total of 125 fifth graders will travel to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and Aquarium. If each bus holds 42 students, how many buses will be needed? • 2 • 3 • 4 • 2 R41
The 125 students will be placed in groups for the trip. If each chaperone has 6 students, how many students would be in the last group? • 20 • 21 • 6 • 5
Each picnic table at the Inner Harbor seats 8 people. How many tables will the 125 students need if they all eat at the same time? • 15 R5 • 15 • 16 • 5
Once in the Aquarium, only 15 students may enter the Dolphin Show at a time. How many groups will need to be formed if all 125 students want to see the show? • 9 • 8 R5 • 8 • 5
Once back at school, students will give presentations about assigned exhibits. If each of the 125 students speak for 9 minutes, how many presentations will there be each day? (Hint: 7 hours = 420 minutes) • 46 R6 • 46 • 47 • 6
A total of 17 pictures from the trip will be placed in the school yearbook. If 4 pictures fit onto one page, how many pages will be needed to include all of the pictures? • 1 • 4 R1 • 4 • 5
When you solve a problem with a remainder, you… • always ignore the remainder • do not use the remainder • sometimes add 1 to the quotient • estimate the answer
