Overview Construction is the process of producing structures. The types of structures that are produced vary from shopping malls, hospitals, stadiums, schools, highways, dams, bridges and houses. The construction industry is the process in which we produce these structures. The area of construction that we will be focusing on deals with shelter. Many things fall under this category and this is one of the earliest forms of construction. From the ancient city of Pompeii to the teepees of the Sioux Indians people have constructed shelters.
Types of Structure • Residential • Houses, apartments, condominiums • Commercial • Shopping malls, car dealerships, stores • Industrial • Factories, treatment plants, hangers • Public • Town halls, schools, hospitals • Private • Mosques, synagogues, churches
Steps in Constructing • 1. Preparing to build. • Select design, consider location and use. • Develop plans, including specifications. • Financing, securing money for land, materials, and labor. • Locate and select building site. • Hire a contractor. • Obtain proper permits. • 2. Preparing the site. • Survey and clear site
Steps in Constructing cont… • 3. Setting foundations. • Foundation spreads the weight of the house out. Set foundation, also known as substructure. • 4. Building the framework. • Framework acts as skeleton for the house. • Construct the superstructure, also known as framing • Frame consitis of floors, walls, and roofs. • 5. Enclosing the structure. • Gives the house rigidity and provides protection from elements. • Install windows and siding.

Installing utilities. • Provides services for the house including electrical, water, waste, climate control, and communications. • Installing utilities, prior to finishing, is called roughing in. • 7. Finishing the interior. • Insulating • Sheathing the interior walls. • Install flooring • 8. Finishing the site. • Clearing site and adding landscapes
