Despite Protestantism expansion, Catholicism remained the dominant religion in many countries • The church controlled the majority of the land and most of the wealth • There was disparity between the upper and lower classes
Church & State Relations WHAT WAS IT LIKE?
NATIONALIZATION:(of the Catholic church) Political Governments tried to take more control of the Catholic church
NATIONALIZATION CON’T: • Jesuits gained political control • 1759-1767: Jesuits expelled from Portugal, France and Spain • 1782: Edict on Idle Institutions in Austria– placed limited barriers on monks
WHY WAS IT IMPORTANT? gave churches control and freedom of the state. People were granted freedom to practice as they chose.
How does this event affect other levels of civilization? • Economically: property was being taken away from Monks; upper class positions in the Catholic Church were receiving revenues and tithes from the faithful
How does this event affect other levels of civilization? Socially: people did not have the right to practice their own religions (some religions were tolerated but could not be practiced in public), own property, or have a decent job
RELIGIOUS TOLERATION: Jews restricted to certain jobs Jews were not allowed to own land or worship in public Nuisance tax removed; allowed more freedom in job selection
Toleration Patent of 1781: • Written by Joseph II of Austria • Allowed religions to worship privately • Gave non-Catholics the right to buy property
This situation of toleration and church/state relation still exists in our society. For example, in Indonesia, Muslims do not want to live with other religious minorities.
