PCR for infectious diseases
Bone marrow examination for some protozoan disease such as Leishmania amastigotes.
3. Disadvantages Patient: None
This technique does not substitute bone marrow biopsy
(histopathology and resultant structural evaluation of the bone marrow)
but may allow for a diagnosis form a cellular or infectious perspective
4. Materials 5-10 cc syringe
21-gauge needle
Frosted slides
Sterile surgical gloves
EDTA tubes
5. Patient Preparation Lateral recumbency with bland sedation
Shave at the 10-13 intercostal space
Surgical preparation
6. Costo-chondral Junction Bone Marrow Technique Palpate the Costo-chondral Junction at the 10-13 ribs.
Use the thumb and forefinger to block the target region.
Insert the 21-gauge needle with attached syringe with constant and determined pressure until the needle is adequately inserted into the costo-chondral junction.
7. Technique Continued Aspirate the marrow blood at least until the hub is filled
Remove the needle with syringe
Slide a small amount of aspirated bone marrow blood onto the frosted slides and utilize the smash technique
